Four Doctors from Apollo Hospital Detained on Account of Medical Negligence
Four doctors from Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur are under detention following allegations of negligence in treatment and evidence tampering. The arrests stem from concerns raised by Goldy Chhabra’s family, who received treatment at the hospital seven years ago. Specialized doctors substantiated the family’s claims of negligence.
On December 26, 2016, the hospital informed authorities of Goldy Chhabra’s death due to sulfur poisoning, prompting an investigation by Kotwali police station. The family expressed concerns during the inquiry regarding the alleged carelessness and improper treatment by the hospital’s doctors and administration. The post-mortem examination took place at the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Bilaspur
The CIMS report revealed instances of negligence by the private hospital management and associated doctors during the treatment. On September 27, 2023, the Directorate of Forensic Science received reports from medical legal experts and advisors of the Chhattisgarh government, highlighting various instances of negligence.
Based on investigations, including post-mortem, medical board, and specialist reports, it was confirmed that Goldy’s death resulted from negligence by the private hospital and associated doctors during treatment. A report from the Directorate of Forensic Science on September 27, 2023, further emphasized these instances of negligence.
In response to the findings, the Sarkanda police station in Bilaspur invoked Sections 304A, 201, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations revealed negligence during treatment by hospital management and four doctors – Dr. Devender Singh, Dr. Rajib Lochan, Dr. Manoj Rai, and Dr. Sunil Kedia. The four doctors were arrested on Friday and subsequently released on bail. An ongoing investigation is addressing allegations of negligence by the hospital management and other doctors involved in the case, according to Sarkanda SHO Jai Prakash.
