Medical Negligence Tragedy: Fatal Error in Tubectomy Procedure

The unfortunate demise of 28-year-old Reshma Begum has brought to light a distressing case of medical negligence at Sakina Hospital in Kalapathar. The attending surgeon, during a tubectomy procedure, erroneously incised Reshma’s small intestine instead of the intended fallopian tube, ultimately resulting in her death.

Reshma, a resident of Islampura Basti in Farooqnagar, Hyderabad, decided on family planning surgery based on her elder sister’s advice. Following the operation on December 17, she suffered persistent vomiting, prompting her husband, Mohammed Abdul Ali, to seek medical attention at the hospital on December 18. Rather than transparently communicating the situation, the doctors forced the couple to sign some agreements and recorded a video.

After visiting a diagnostic center in Shadnagar, another doctor revealed that the small intestine had been inadvertently severed, during the tubectomy procedure. Despite undergoing treatment at Owaisi Hospital, Reshma succumbed to complications on Monday evening, leaving behind her husband and four children

The police have taken action by registering a case under Section 304 (A) of the IPC against the hospital management, citing alleged negligence that led to Reshma’s tragic death. On Tuesday, Reshma’s body underwent a thorough autopsy at Osmania General Hospital before being returned to her family.

These incidents have raised concerns about the need for thorough investigations into medical procedures to ensure patient safety and prevent such tragic incidents in the future.

This is so uncommon at the hands of a qualified gynaecologist or general surgeon, that it has medical negligence, written all over it. The doctors culpable of such a level of irresponsibility have to be handed down the maximum punishment by a court of law.
