WHO Sounds Alarm on Cholera Vaccine Shortage as Deaths Surge by 126%
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the global stockpile of oral cholera vaccines has run out, which is a major concern for controlling the spread of the disease. In their monthly report, the WHO explained that even though vaccine production is at full capacity, demand is higher than what can be supplied.
WHO reported that as of October 14, the global stock of oral cholera vaccines has been fully exhausted, leaving no available doses. While more doses are expected soon, the shortage is already affecting efforts to stop the disease, especially in outbreak areas.
Vaccine Shortfall Amid Rising Demand
From September 1 to October 14, countries like Bangladesh, Sudan, Niger, Ethiopia, and Myanmar requested a combined total of 8.4 million doses of oral cholera vaccines. However, due to the limited stock, only 7.6 million doses could be delivered. This shortage makes it difficult to respond effectively to cholera outbreaks and prevent further spread.
Spike in Deaths Despite Fewer Cases
The WHO reported that up to September 29, there have been 439,724 cholera cases and 3,432 deaths in 2024. While the number of cases is 16% lower compared to last year, the number of deaths has increased by 126%, raising serious concerns.
This rise in mortality is likely due to outbreaks occurring in conflict zones and areas where healthcare access is limited. Additionally, flooding in some regions has worsened the situation by compromising sanitation and increasing cholera transmission.
New Outbreaks in Vulnerable Regions
Recent cholera outbreaks have been reported in Niger (705 cases and 17 deaths) and Thailand (five cases with no deaths), bringing the total number of affected countries in 2024 to 30. In September alone, 47,234 new cases were recorded across 14 countries. This month, a cholera case was identified in Lebanon, where the WHO warned of a “very high” risk of further spread due to poor sanitation conditions in areas with large numbers of displaced people.
Vaccine Supply Limited to One Manufacturer
As of April, the global cholera vaccine supply mainly relies on a South Korean company, EuBiologics, currently the sole supplier. However, other vaccine manufacturers are expected to join the global stockpile in the coming years, potentially easing the supply crisis in the future.
Understanding Cholera
Cholera is a serious intestinal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae, a bacterium often found in human waste. It causes severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and muscle cramps, and can be fatal within hours if untreated. The disease is preventable and treatable, with simple oral rehydration solutions and antibiotics for more severe cases.
