A tragic accident occurred at Kannauj railway station on Saturday when the ceiling slab of an under-construction building suddenly gave way. The mishap has left several workers and railway staff trapped under the rubble, sparking panic and emergency rescue efforts.

Incident Overview

The fall occurred early in the morning when a two-story building’s ceiling slab was being laid. This project was part of the station’s renovation under the Amrit Bharat scheme. Approximately 40 people were at the site during the incident.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties

Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, launching a large-scale rescue operation. So far, 23 individuals have been rescued from the debris. Five people sustained serious injuries and have been referred to Lucknow for specialized treatment. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate care.

Unfortunately, several others remain trapped, and efforts to remove the heavy debris are ongoing. Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and local police are working tirelessly to save lives.

Financial Assistance Announced

The Uttar Pradesh government has stepped in to provide financial aid to the victims. Those with serious injuries will receive compensation of ₹2.5 lakh, while individuals with minor injuries will be given ₹50,000.

Chaos and Community Response

The incident created chaos as locals rushed to the site to help but were hindered by the sheer weight of the debris. The collapse has raised concerns about the safety measures and quality standards in construction projects under government schemes.

Looking Ahead

This unfortunate event highlights the need for stricter safety protocols and regular inspections during large-scale construction projects. As rescue operations continue, authorities must ensure that those affected receive proper medical care and financial support.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks construction workers face and the importance of ensuring safety in infrastructure development. As the rescue mission progresses, more updates will follow.
