Declared Dead by Hospital, UP Woman Starts Coughing

A shocking incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has left a family searching for answers after a 56-year-old woman reportedly showed signs of life while her relatives were preparing for her last rites. The family said doctors at a private hospital had declared Lalita Devi dead. However, after they brought her home, she suddenly started coughing during the final rituals.
Her relatives immediately took her to Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur, where she is now receiving treatment. The hospital has not yet issued an official statement about her condition or explained the circumstances surrounding the earlier declaration of death.

How Did Lalita Devi's Condition Worsen?

Lalita Devi, a resident of Belwa Dakhili village in the Barhalganj police station area, had been experiencing fever for around a week.
Her family first sought treatment from a local medical practitioner near Pidhani crossing. However, her health deteriorated on Tuesday, prompting her relatives to admit her to a private hospital in Barhalganj.
According to the family, doctors suspected a brain haemorrhage and advised them to take her to Gorakhpur for further treatment. The relatives followed the advice, hoping she would receive the medical care she needed.

Family Begins Last Rites After Hospital Declares Her Dead

Lalita Devi’s brother-in-law, Chandramauli Yadav, said a private hospital in Gorakhpur declared her dead on Wednesday. The family then took her body back to their village.
Believing that she had died, the relatives began making arrangements for her final rites. They prepared a bamboo bier, while the women in the family started the customary rituals.
Then, something unexpected happened.
As the family performed the final rites, a relative poured water mixed with tulsi leaves into Lalita Devi’s mouth. According to Chandramauli Yadav, she suddenly began coughing.
The unexpected movement startled everyone present. The family stopped the rituals and rushed her to BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur for immediate medical attention.

What Is Her Condition Now?

Lalita Devi is undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College, according to her family. Doctors have not publicly confirmed her current medical condition.
The circumstances that led the private hospital to declare her dead also remain unclear. There is no official information about the medical examinations performed before the declaration or the findings recorded after she reached BRD Medical College.
Therefore, the precise medical reason behind the incident cannot yet be established.

Conclusion

The case highlights the importance of confirming death through an appropriate medical assessment. A person’s condition can sometimes be difficult to assess when breathing and circulation are extremely weak. However, it would be inappropriate to assume that this happened in Lalita Devi’s case without medical evidence.

Her examination at BRD Medical College may help doctors establish her condition and clarify what happened before and after the family took her home.

The case also underlines why families need clear communication from healthcare professionals during critical medical situations. An accurate explanation can help relatives understand a patient’s condition and make informed decisions about further care.
