Actor Asrani Dies in Mumbai After Prolonged Illness

Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai on Monday after a prolonged illness. The news of Asrani’s death due to lung complications was confirmed by his family after his last rites were performed at the Santacruz Crematorium.

Hospitalization and Health Condition

According to family sources, Asrani had been admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days before his demise. His health had been deteriorating due to fluid accumulation in the lungs, a condition medically referred to as pleural effusion.
Doctors attending to him reportedly made every effort to stabilize his breathing, but his condition worsened over the weekend. He passed away on October 20, around 3:30 p.m.

Cause of Death: Fluid in the Lungs

Medical experts explain that fluid buildup in the lungs can interfere with oxygen exchange, making breathing increasingly difficult. This can occur due to various underlying causes such as infections, chronic heart or kidney disease, or prolonged illness.

In Asrani’s case, according to his personal assistant Babubhai, the hospital team had identified this lung-related complication as a major concern during his final days. Thus, Asrani’s death due to lung complications was not sudden but followed a gradual decline in health.

Funeral and Family’s Statement

The family, originally from Jaipur, chose to keep the news private until the funeral ceremonies were completed at the Santacruz Crematorium. Speaking to the media, Babubhai said,
“Asrani sahab was admitted to the hospital four days ago. Doctors told us there was water accumulation in his lungs. He passed away on October 20 at around 3:30 p.m., and his last rites have been performed.”

Conclusion

Lung fluid buildup (pleural effusion) can be a serious medical condition, especially in older adults or those with chronic diseases. Early medical attention, respiratory monitoring, and timely treatment can help prevent fatal outcomes like Asrani’s death due to lung complications.

Asrani was a beloved name in Indian cinema, celebrated for his comic timing and versatile performances across several decades. Besides acting, he also ventured into film direction, leaving behind a rich legacy in both mainstream and character-driven cinema.
