VIP Perks in Jail? Kerala Officials Suspended in Scandal
Two senior prison officials in Kerala have been suspended for allegedly granting special privileges to prominent businessman Boby Chemmanur while he was in judicial custody. The decision comes after an inquiry report revealed procedural violations during his detention.
Why the Officials Were Suspended
The Kerala government suspended P Ajayakumar, Deputy Inspector General of the Central Region Jail, and Raju Abraham, Superintendent of Ernakulam District Jail, following allegations that they allowed unauthorised visitors to meet Chemmanur during his detention.
Reports indicate that Chemmanur’s friends were granted access to him at the Ernakulam District Jail, violating standard procedures. The inquiry prompted the Kerala Home Department to take immediate disciplinary action against the two officials.
The Allegations Against Boby Chemmanur
Boby Chemmanur, a well-known businessman and jewellery brand owner in Kerala, was arrested on January 9. Malayalam actress Honey Rose accused him of stalking and making inappropriate remarks through media platforms. She claimed his behavior was offensive and violated her dignity.
Chemmanur was taken into custody from his resort in Wayanad and charged under:
- Section 75(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexually suggestive comments.
- Section 67 of the IT Act for electronically transmitting obscene material.
Court’s Observations and Bail Decision
The Kerala High Court granted Chemmanur bail on January 14, stating that “bail is the rule, and jail is the exception.” However, the court acknowledged that his language had “double meanings,” which could easily be interpreted as offensive.
Despite being granted bail, Chemmanur delayed his release by a day. He claimed it was to show solidarity with fellow inmates struggling to secure bail. The court criticised this delay, calling it a “media stunt” to attract attention.
Conclusion
The suspension of the prison officials highlights the Kerala government’s strict stance on procedural violations within the justice system. Meanwhile, Chemmanur faces ongoing scrutiny for his actions and their legal repercussions. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of impartiality and adherence to rules in upholding justice.
