Woman Raped in Public on Ujjain Street; Bystanders Filmed Incident
A horrifying incident of rape in broad daylight has shaken Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The assault took place on a busy footpath at Koyla Phatak, one of the city’s most crowded intersections, on Wednesday. Despite many bystanders witnessing the crime, no one intervened. Instead, someone filmed the attack and uploaded the footage on social media, which later went viral.
Police Investigation and Arrest
After the video gained attention online, the police managed to track down the survivor, a woman who makes a living as a ragpicker. She was taken for medical examination following the crime. According to Ujjain Superintendent of Police, the accused, Lokesh, has been arrested. The survivor revealed she knew him, and he had lured her with false promises of marriage before forcing her to drink alcohol and raping her.
Lokesh was arrested within two hours of the First Information Report (FIR) being filed. He later confessed to the crime during interrogation, and the court sent him to judicial custody.
Political Reactions and Criticism
The incident has sparked a political debate between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The Congress criticized the BJP government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order in the state. Congress leaders pointed out that the crime occurred in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s constituency, which added to their outrage. They also highlighted that 18 women are subjected to rape or harassment every day in Madhya Pradesh.

In response, BJP leaders condemned the politicization of the incident, stressing that the accused had been arrested and would face the harshest punishment. They defended the government’s efforts to combat such crimes, mentioning the introduction of strict laws, including the death penalty for rapists.
On the other hand, BJP leaders responded by accusing Congress of politicizing the tragedy. BJP Madhya Pradesh President V.D. Sharma defended the government’s actions, stating that the swift arrest of the accused shows their commitment to punishing perpetrators. He also mentioned that the BJP-led government was the first to introduce the death penalty for such crimes.
Public Reactions
The incident has sparked public outrage and a war of words between the two political parties. Congress took to social media, posting the viral video and demanding accountability from the government. They questioned the silence of top leaders, including PM Modi and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. BJP spokespersons responded by assuring the public that strict action would be taken against the accused while condemning Congress for trying to exploit the incident for political gains.
Both parties continue to exchange heated remarks as the investigation proceeds, with the focus now on ensuring justice for the survivor.
