Viral Video Shows Chicken Cooked in Plastic Packaging

A viral Instagram video has drawn wide attention after showing chicken being cooked without removing its plastic packaging. Beyond the humour and shock online, the incident highlights important health risks of cooking chicken in plastic packaging, health risks that both medical professionals and home cooks should understand.
The video was shared by Saurav Devrani on Instagram and quickly spread across social media. Viewers reacted with laughter, surprise, and concern after noticing chicken pieces simmering in gravy while still sealed inside the original store wrapper.

What exactly happened in the kitchen

In the video, the chicken cooks slowly in a pan, but the transparent plastic packaging remains intact. Devrani later explained that he usually stores frozen chicken in the refrigerator and did not clearly inform the household helper that the plastic needed to be removed before cooking.
He said in Hindi that someone likely forgot to explain that the chicken should never be cooked directly in its packaging. As a result, the helper placed the frozen chicken straight into the gravy, unaware of the mistake.

Why doctors warn against cooking food in plastic

From a medical and public health point of view, cooking chicken in plastic packaging poses serious health risks and is well-documented. Most plastic wraps release harmful chemicals when exposed to heat. These substances can leach into food and enter the body.

Doctors explain that heating plastic may release compounds linked to hormonal imbalance, digestive irritation, and long-term health concerns. Ingesting food cooked this way may also increase the risk of nausea, abdominal discomfort, and chemical exposure that the body struggles to eliminate.

For this reason, food safety experts strongly advise removing all plastic packaging before cooking, reheating, or frying any food.

How social media users reacted

The unusual mistake amused many viewers, while others expressed disbelief. Comments ranged from light-hearted jokes to stunned reactions.
One user joked that it must be her first day on the job. Another wrote that they felt grateful for their own home cook. Others commented that the incident reset expectations people have of household cooking help. One user even asked whether her notice period had already started.
Despite the humour, many viewers also acknowledged that unclear instructions at home can easily lead to such errors.

Conclusion

Incidents like this remind families why clear communication about food handling matters. From a health perspective, avoiding cooking chicken in plastic packaging protects everyone in the household.
Medical experts advise households to explain basic food safety steps clearly and to double-check ingredients before cooking. Simple awareness can prevent health hazards and ensure safe meals for all.
