Sister’s tip exposes brother posing as doctor with fake papers

A doctor impersonation case at a medical college in Latur, Maharashtra, has triggered a major investigation after a woman accused her brother of using someone else’s medical degree to secure a specialist post. The allegation surfaced suddenly, but it has now led to a full document audit and district-level inquiry. Officials confirmed that the accused resigned immediately after the matter came to light.

How the Alleged Fraud Unfolded

According to the complaint filed by Dr. Sonali Singh, her brother, Abhinav Singh, allegedly used the medical certificates of her husband, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Gupta, to obtain a cardiac specialist position in 2022.

Dr. Gupta, whose documents were reportedly misused, is currently practising in the United States.

Moreover, the college administration said that the accused had been working under Dr. Gupta’s name, which raised serious concerns about patient safety, credential verification, and regulatory scrutiny.

Immediate Action by the Medical College

College principal Dr. Mayank Shukla stated that the allegation arrived without any prior indication, and therefore, the institution immediately began cross-checking documents across all departments.

As the claims gained credibility, the accused doctor resigned promptly.

To further strengthen accountability, the Chief Medical Officer has formed a panel to:

  • Verify the authenticity of certificates submitted at the time of appointment
  • Review how the alleged fraudulent appointment bypassed standard verification steps
  • Examine previous recruitments over the last few years

This broader review aims to identify any additional discrepancies and prevent similar lapses in the future.

Legal and Administrative Steps Ahead

Officials noted that once the inquiry panel submits its final report, the administration plans to:

  • File an official police complaint
  • Initiate legal proceedings
  • Recover the salary paid during the alleged period of fraudulent employment

District officials have also been briefed, and updates are being shared with the state government to ensure transparent handling of this doctor impersonation case.

Why This Matters

This doctor impersonation case underscores the importance of strict credential verification in healthcare institutions. Ensuring that only qualified and legitimately certified professionals treat patients is essential for clinical safety, medical ethics, and public trust.
