Viral Post Sparks Debate on Zomato Hyperpure's 'Fake' Paneer
Introduction
A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) has raised concerns about the quality of paneer sold on Zomato’s restaurant supply platform, Hyperpure. An X user shared a screenshot showing “analogue paneer” listed on the website, sparking a heated discussion online. Hyperpure is Zomato’s supply chain service catering to the HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, and Caterers) industry, providing items like groceries, meats, and kitchen equipment to restaurants.
What is Analogue Paneer?
The product in question, labeled “Soft and Fresh Paneer (Analogue),” is sold in bulk at Rs 205.53/kg for quantities of 5kg or more. According to the product description, it is made from skimmed milk and is suitable for tikka and gravy dishes. However, analogue paneer, commonly known as “fake” or “synthetic” paneer, is typically made from a mix of milk and vegetable oils. It is less expensive to produce than traditional dairy-based paneer.
Public Reaction to the Viral Post
The post has garnered over 145,000 views and stirred strong reactions. Many users expressed disappointment, accusing restaurants of misleading customers by using this cheaper alternative without any clear disclosure. One user commented, “Everything is adulterated or overpriced nowadays,” while another added, “It’s disheartening to see @zomato openly selling this.”
Several vegetarians were particularly upset, with one stating, “As a vegetarian, this is extremely disappointing. I’ll stick to home-cooked meals from now on.” Another user pointed out, “If you’re ordering food, assume it’s junk. Any nutritional benefit is a bonus.”
Zomato's Response Awaited
Media reached out to Zomato for a statement regarding the sale of analogue paneer, but there has been no response yet. The viral post continues to spark debate, highlighting concerns over transparency in the restaurant industry.
