Top 3 Drinks That Destroy Your Liver, Says Doctor

Fatty liver disease is becoming increasingly common, often linked to poor dietary and lifestyle habits. While many people focus on food, few realize that what you drink can have a significant impact on liver health as well.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist and liver specialist, recently shared on Instagram the three worst beverages for people with fatty liver. He also offered healthier drink alternatives to support liver function and prevent complications like cirrhosis.

1. Sodas

Sodas and other sugary drinks are loaded with added sugars, particularly fructose, which the liver processes. When consumed in excess, this sugar turns into fat in the liver, increasing the risk of insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

What happens: Over time, this can lead to inflammation and liver damage.

Tip: Always check labels and avoid drinks with high-fructose corn syrup or added sugars.

2. Alcohol

While moderate alcohol intake is often debated, Dr. Sethi clearly states that all forms of alcohol, including red wine, can contribute to liver fat buildup and damage. Alcohol directly affects liver cells, and with regular use, it may lead to alcoholic fatty liver disease, and eventually, cirrhosis.

Even small amounts of alcohol can worsen an already fatty liver.

Tip: If you already have liver issues, it’s best to avoid alcohol completely.

3. Energy Drinks

Energy and sports drinks may seem like a quick boost, but most are high in sugar and caffeine. This combination can stress the liver and worsen fatty liver disease, especially if consumed regularly.

They may also contain additives and stimulants that can increase inflammation.

Tip: Choose natural ways to increase energy, like staying hydrated and getting regular sleep.

Better Drink Choices for a Healthier Liver

✔ Coffee

Multiple studies show that coffee may protect the liver by reducing inflammation and slowing the progression of liver disease. It also supports enzyme function.

Bonus: It may lower your risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer when consumed in moderation (1–2 cups a day).

✔ Black Tea

Rich in antioxidants, black tea supports the body’s defence system. It may also help lower fat buildup in the liver.

✔ Green Tea

Known for its high content of catechins (a type of antioxidant), green tea may reduce oxidative stress and fat levels in the liver.

✔ Beetroot Juice

Beets are high in nitrates and antioxidants, which may support liver detoxification and reduce inflammation. Drinking beetroot juice can improve blood flow and help cleanse the liver naturally.

Why It Matters

Dr. Sethi emphasizes that poor beverage choices can silently worsen fatty liver and increase the risk of long-term complications. However, by making simple changes—like swapping soda or alcohol for coffee or green tea—you can significantly improve liver function and your overall well-being.

“Choose coffee, black tea, green tea, or beetroot juice instead,” Dr. Sethi advised in his video.

Conclusion

Your liver works 24/7 to filter toxins, aid digestion, and regulate metabolism. What you drink every day can either support or sabotage this vital organ. With just a few mindful swaps, you can give your liver the care it truly deserves.

Stay informed. Make smart choices. Protect your liver.
