Road Scam to Murder: The Story Behind Mukesh’s Tragic End

Hyderabad police, in collaboration with the Special Investigation Team (SIT), arrested Suresh Chandrakar, the primary suspect in the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. The arrest took place on Monday, following an intense search after Mukesh’s tragic death.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a fearless journalist and YouTuber from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, went missing on January 1. His body was discovered on January 5 in a septic tank at a contractor’s property in Bijapur district. The tank had been recently sealed with concrete, raising suspicion among investigators.

Mukesh was well-known for exposing corruption in Bastar, particularly in the insurgency-affected Bijapur region. Just days before his disappearance, he uncovered an alleged road construction scam, which prompted an official inquiry into local contractors. Police suspect this exposé led to his murder.

On New Year’s Day, Mukesh reportedly received a call from a contractor and informed a journalist friend in Raipur before heading to the meeting. When he didn’t return, his brother, Yugesh, filed a missing person complaint. This eventually led police to the crime scene—Suresh Chandrakar’s residence in Chattanpara Basti.

The brutal killing has sent shockwaves through the journalist community. Bastar Journalist Association president Manish Gupta called it a “dark chapter,” expressing concern for reporters in such volatile areas. He urged the government and police to ensure the safety of journalists.
Protests erupted across the region, with the Raipur Press Club organizing a candlelight vigil at Jai Stambh Chowk. In Bijapur, journalists observed a complete shutdown, demanding immediate action against those responsible.

Bastar police confirmed that Suresh Chandrakar had been evading arrest since Mukesh’s body was found. However, his capture in Hyderabad marks a significant step forward in the investigation.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his condolences and assured swift justice. In a statement, he said, “The murder of a dedicated journalist is heartbreaking. The perpetrators will face the law.”

Mukesh was not only known for his investigative reporting but also his bravery. In 2021, he played a key role in negotiating the release of a CoBRA commando abducted by Maoists during the Tekulguda massacre, where 29 security personnel lost their lives.
His relentless pursuit of truth in one of India’s most dangerous regions highlighted the risks journalists face covering conflict zones.

Conclusion:

Mukesh’s death has reignited conversations about journalist safety in high-risk areas like Bastar. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for stronger protections for those working on the frontlines of truth and justice.
