Justice for RG Kar Medical College Incident: Key Updates on the Verdict

Court Declares Main Accused Guilty

Nearly five months after the tragic death of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Sealdah Court in West Bengal has delivered its verdict. Sanjoy Roy, the main accused, has been found guilty of rape and murder charges. The court relied on forensic evidence, including DNA found at the crime scene and on the victim’s body, to reach its decision.

Possible Sentencing for the Convicted

Sanjoy Roy, who has consistently maintained his innocence, could face severe consequences. According to Additional District Judge Anirban Das, the maximum sentence for Roy is the death penalty, while the minimum is life imprisonment. The court will announce the final sentence on January 20 at 12:30 PM after hearing from the accused.

Roy's Defense: Claims of False Implication

During the hearing, Roy continued to assert his innocence, claiming he was falsely implicated.

He stated, “I have not done this. Those who are responsible are being let go.” Roy also alleged that a senior official was involved in framing him.

Tragic RG Kar Medical College Incident That Shocked the Nation

The horrifying event unfolded in August 2024 when the half-naked body of the postgraduate medical student was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The preliminary autopsy report revealed evidence of sexual assault before her death. The inquest highlighted severe injuries, including bleeding from the victim’s eyes, mouth, and genitals, along with multiple injury marks on her body.

How the Accused Was Identified

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 after investigators linked him to the crime through a Bluetooth earphone found near the victim’s body. Exclusive CCTV footage also placed him near the crime scene moments before the incident occurred.

Nationwide Protests Demand Justice

The gruesome incident sparked outrage among the medical community. Doctors across Bengal and the country organized protests, demanding justice for the victim and stricter security measures in state-run hospitals.

Awaiting the Final Verdict

As the court prepares to announce Sanjoy Roy’s sentence, the case remains a chilling reminder of the need for justice and safety in public institutions. The nation waits for the final judgment, hoping for a resolution that honors the victim and deters such crimes in the future.
