Facebook Romance Ends with Death of Two Infants
A shocking incident has come to light in Thrissur, Kerala, where a man and a woman have been taken into police custody following the discovery of the skeletal remains of two newborn babies. The case, now under active investigation, involves suspected infanticide in one of the deaths and has raised serious questions about maternal health, hidden pregnancies, and mental health support.
The Incident: Discovery of Remains
In the early hours of Sunday, a man walked into the Pudukad police station in an intoxicated state around 12:30 AM, carrying a bag. Inside were what he claimed to be the skeletal remains of two babies. He told the police that the infants had died during two separate incidents and handed over the remains for investigation.
After this, the police took the woman his partner into custody for questioning. The couple were reportedly in a relationship but not married. They are believed to have met on Facebook in 2020 and have been together since.
First Baby: Claimed Natural Death During Birth
According to the woman’s statement to police, the first baby died from natural causes. She said that during childbirth, the umbilical cord got wrapped around the baby’s neck, leading to the baby’s death. She buried the infant near her home and kept the remains, reportedly to perform post-death rituals at a later stage.
At this point in the investigation, there is no indication of foul play in this first death. However, forensic examination is ongoing to confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Second Baby: Suspected Murder
The second case, however, has raised serious legal and ethical concerns. As per the woman’s confession to the police, she allegedly suffocated the second newborn shortly after birth because the baby cried. She then handed the body over to the man, who buried it.
Authorities have confirmed that this death is being treated as a criminal case of murder. According to Thrissur Rural Police Chief B. Krishnakumar, “The death of the second baby is being investigated under murder charges.”
Preliminary forensic reports have verified that the remains belong to two newborns, and further analysis is being conducted to determine the precise cause and timing of death.
Relationship Strain and Secrecy
The case only surfaced after growing tension between the couple. According to police sources, the man became suspicious that the woman might be planning to marry someone else. His suspicion grew further when he discovered she owned a second mobile phone.
These personal disputes appear to have triggered the man’s decision to approach the police. His actions ultimately brought this hidden tragedy into the public eye.
Medical and Legal Implications
This case underscores the dangers of unassisted and secret pregnancies. Complications like umbilical cord accidents, as claimed in the first case, are medical emergencies that require professional intervention. Meanwhile, the second case raises ethical and psychiatric concerns that warrant psychological evaluation and social scrutiny.
Legally, the case has now entered a sensitive phase. While one death may be considered natural, the second is under criminal investigation. Both the man and the woman may face serious charges if proven guilty.
Conclusion
This case is not just a legal matter it is a wake-up call for improved sexual education, mental health support, and maternal care in India. Early intervention, family counselling, and access to safe reproductive healthcare might have prevented such a tragic outcome.
As the investigation continues, it serves as a grim reminder of the need for open conversations around reproductive rights, social stigma, and mental wellness.
