Dowry Allegations Push Lucknow Man to Suicide

Summary: A Lucknow man died by suicide after being accused of dowry harassment by his in-laws following his wife’s death due to illness. In an emotional note, he claimed he was blackmailed, separated from his daughter, and mentally harassed over property. An FIR has been registered based on his final letter.

A Grieving Husband, a Heartbroken Father and a Final Note

In a tragic turn of events from Lucknow’s Birbal Sahni Marg area, a man named Vishnu Kamta Prasad Verma died by suicide after allegedly facing intense mental harassment from his in-laws. His wife, Shalini Soni, had recently passed away from a prolonged illness, but instead of sympathy, Vishnu said he was met with false accusations of dowry harassment.

What Happened: From Wife's Illness to Allegations

According to Vishnu’s three-page suicide note, Shalini had been suffering from chronic health issues, including a skin disease and ulcers. He had reportedly taken her to doctors both within and outside Lucknow for treatment. Despite his efforts, her condition worsened, eventually leading to her death.

However, after Shalini’s passing, her family filed a dowry death case against Vishnu. This, he wrote, marked the beginning of relentless emotional torment.

Dowry Death Allegations and Property Pressure

Vishnu’s suicide note named four people, his father-in-law Bharat Soni, his mother-in-law Mamta Soni, his brother-in-law Santosh Soni, and Santosh’s wife Akash Soni, as responsible for his deteriorating mental health. He alleged they not only falsely accused him in the name of dowry but also pressured him to transfer land ownership.

He claimed his in-laws had also taken away jewellery from Shalini’s cupboard and denied him contact with his 3-year-old daughter, Riddhima, whom he called his “last hope.”

“Riddhima, Papa Loved You Very Much” – The Last Words

The most heartbreaking part of Vishnu’s note was his emotional message to his daughter:

“Riddhima, Papa loved you very much and always will.”

He revealed that following his wife’s death, even the only emotional support he had, his daughter, was snatched away by the same people accusing him. He pleaded that after his death, custody of Riddhima be given to his mother and sister, not the in-laws.

Police Action and FIR Registration

Based on the suicide note, Mahanagar Police have registered an FIR against all four accused individuals. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and whether there was foul play or coercion that led to Vishnu’s death.

Conclusion: A Tragic Reminder of the Human Cost of False Accusations

This heartbreaking case from Lucknow highlights how dowry laws, meant to protect women, can sometimes be misused, causing irreversible trauma. Vishnu’s letter paints a vivid picture of grief, isolation, and emotional abuse, with devastating consequences.

As the investigation unfolds, this incident raises urgent questions about

  • Legal safeguards
  • Mental health support
  • The welfare of children caught in family disputes
