Australian Woman Criticizes Indian Cuisine, Faces Backlash on Social Media

An Australian YouTuber, Sydney Watson, has sparked a social media controversy after criticizing Indian food in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The incident began when a user, @FlipMan, shared a picture of a delicious Indian food spread, captioning it, “Indian food is the best on earth. Fight me.”

Criticism Sparks Debate

In response, Watson disagreed with the statement, replying, “It isn’t,” and further added, “If your food requires you to put dirt spices all over it for it to be palatable, your food is not good.” This comment did not sit well with many users, triggering an online backlash.

Viral Response to Watson’s Post

Watson’s post quickly went viral, gathering over 23 million views. Many people voiced their disagreement with her opinion. One user stated, “I’m sat in my favourite Indian restaurant. You’re wrong.” Another commenter said, “Sydney is the kind of person you wouldn’t want to have dinner with.” The criticisms kept rolling in, with many defending the rich and varied flavours of Indian cuisine.

Global Appreciation for Indian Food

Supporters of Indian cuisine highlighted the complexity and medicinal benefits of Indian spices. One user remarked, “Indian food is among the top cuisines due to its sophisticated use of spices, each with its medicinal properties.” Another pointed out the vast variety of Indian dishes, stating, “There are at least 5,000 different dishes in Indian cuisine, but the West has probably only tasted 10.”

Indian Cuisine on the Global Stage

Indian cuisine has long been celebrated for its unique flavours and has become increasingly popular worldwide. Last year, the Croatian travel guide TasteAtlas ranked Indian cuisine as the 11th best globally, further emphasizing its global recognition.
