40% of Women with PCOD May Develop Diabetes: Experts

Diabetes: Experts High Risk of Diabetes in Women with PCOD

According to medical experts, by the age of 30, more than 40% of women with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) are likely to develop diabetes. Dr. Seema Pandey, the founder of the PCODestigmatised Foundation, highlighted this alarming statistic while emphasizing that women with PCOD are also at an increased risk of other serious health conditions as they grow older. These include hypertension, heart disease, brain haemorrhages, and uterine cancer.

The Importance of Early Intervention

Experts at the event, held in Lucknow, stressed that early detection and management are crucial in combating PCOD. Raising awareness about the condition, especially among younger women, is essential to managing and preventing the complications associated with it. Addressing lifestyle factors early on, such as diet and exercise, can significantly reduce the risk of developing severe health issues later in life.

India's High PCOD Incidence Calls for Action

India has the highest rate of PCOD in the world, with approximately one in every four to five girls affected. This highlights the urgent need for widespread awareness and intervention. Foundation members emphasized the importance of educating young women on how to manage lifestyle factors, like weight and stress, to prevent or mitigate the effects of PCOD.

Prominent Guests and Awareness Initiatives

The event featured Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak as the chief guest, with Aparna Yadav, Vice Chairperson of the UP State Women Commission, as the guest of honour. To further the cause, a short film was also released, showcasing the challenges faced by women doctors who deal with PCOD. The film aims to shed light on the realities of living with this condition and inspire a stronger commitment to raising awareness and improving women’s health.
