Odisha Boy Dies After Swallowing Toy Gun in Chips Pack

A four-year-old Odisha boy swallowed a toy gun from a packet of chips and tragically lost his life after the small plastic object became lodged in his airway. According to health officials, the child was brought to the Daringbadi Community Health Centre in Kandhamal district, but despite urgent efforts, he could not be revived.

How the Incident Happened

On Monday, the child’s father, Ranjit Pradhan, brought home a packet of chips. As the boy opened it, he found a miniature toy gun inside a common promotional freebie in many snack packets. While playing, the boy unexpectedly placed the toy in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it.
Immediately, the toy became stuck in his throat, causing severe breathing difficulty. As soon as the child cried out, his parents, who were working nearby, rushed to him and attempted to remove the object. However, when they could not dislodge it, they quickly transported him to the nearest health facility.

Emergency Response and Medical Findings

Even though the family travelled nearly 30 kilometres to reach the Daringbadi Community Health Centre, the boy was declared dead upon arrival.
Dr. Jakesh Samantaray, the medical officer in charge, confirmed that the toy completely blocked the child’s airway, leaving no passage for air to reach the lungs. He stated that the obstruction led to rapid respiratory failure, which proved fatal before medical help could be provided.

Doctors Urge Parents to Be Alert About Small Objects

This heartbreaking case, where an Odisha boy swallowed a toy gun from a snack packet, highlights the ongoing risk posed by small toys or objects marketed to young children. Health professionals emphasise that items small enough to fit into a child’s mouth can become life-threatening if swallowed.

They advise parents to:

  • Check snack packets for tiny toys or detachable items
  • Supervise children closely, especially during play and eating
  • Seek immediate medical help if choking is suspected

Conclusion

The tragic death of the Odisha boy who swallowed a toy gun serves as a painful reminder of how quickly choking incidents can turn fatal. With better awareness and preventive measures, similar accidents can be avoided.
