Notice to Assam doctor for 21 C-sections in 10 hours

The Morigaon C-section case has stirred debate in Assam after a senior gynecologist allegedly performed 21 cesarean deliveries within just ten hours. The district administration has issued a show-cause notice, asking the doctor to explain his actions and provide detailed reports for each surgery.

Notice Issued to Senior Gynecologist

On September 6, the Morigaon district administration served a show-cause notice to Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi, senior gynecologist and medical officer at Morigaon Civil Hospital. The notice, signed by Additional District Commissioner (Health) Nitisha Bora, questions how such a high number of surgeries were conducted between 3:40 pm on September 5 and 1:50 am on September 6.
The doctor has been instructed to submit his explanation and case-wise reports within three days.

Concerns Over Safety and Documentation

According to the administration, serious concerns arise when so many C-sections are performed in a short span. Authorities have asked Dr. Bordoloi to provide:

  • Case records of all 21 patients
  • Proof that sterilisation protocols for surgical instruments were followed
  • Documentation of fetal distress, if present
  • Details of newborns admitted to the Sick Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU)
  • Roles and responsibilities of the assisting staff

Officials also noted that pre-operative and post-operative notes were not properly maintained. The notice stated that such documentation is vital to prevent infection and reduce the risks of maternal or newborn complications.

Doctor Defends His Work

In response to the allegations, Dr. Bordoloi defended his conduct in the Morigaon C-section case. He told the media that he is fully competent to handle multiple surgeries within a limited time.
“What I have done is not unusual. Many doctors perform several surgeries in one shift. Perhaps someone has complained against me,” he said.
The doctor explained that a routine cesarean surgery usually takes 20–25 minutes, but can be completed in about 15 minutes in less complicated cases. He also highlighted that the hospital’s operating theatre has two tables, which allows sterilisation to be alternated without compromising safety.

Current Condition of Patients

Out of the 21 mothers and babies, 19 have already been discharged in stable condition. Two are still admitted, one of them referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced care.
While defending his record, Dr. Bordoloi also expressed frustration. He hinted that he may consider resigning from government service if such “conspiracies” and repeated questioning continue.

Conclusion

The Morigaon C-section case raises important questions about patient safety, quality of documentation, and the capacity of public hospitals to handle emergencies. While the administration investigates the matter, the case has highlighted the delicate balance between efficiency and safety in maternal healthcare.
