No Doctor? Guard Stitches Patient in Viral Clip

A shocking incident has come to light from a government hospital in Bihar, drawing attention to serious gaps in patient care. The case, which surfaced through a viral video, shows a security guard stitching a patient’s wound inside an operation theatre. While the situation unfolded during an emergency, it has triggered widespread concern about medical safety standards in public hospitals.

What Happened Inside the Hospital

The incident took place at a sub-divisional hospital in Bagaha, located in West Champaran district. Several injured individuals arrived at the hospital following a major road accident involving a tempo and a pickup vehicle.
As doctors attended to multiple critical patients at once, a security guard was seen performing suturing on one of the injured individuals. This act, captured on video, quickly spread across social media platforms and sparked public outrage.
The real-life Munna Bhai incident reminds many of the fictional story shown in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.. However, unlike the film, this situation involved real patients and real risks.

Patients Raise Serious Allegations

Two injured individuals, identified as Wasim Akhtar and Surendra Pasi, later stated that the security guard stitched their wounds. They claimed that qualified doctors were present in the hospital at the time.
However, due to staff shortage and heavy patient load, the procedure was reportedly carried out by the guard. The patients described the experience as unsafe and alarming, adding that such actions could have led to severe complications.

Why This Raises Medical Concerns

In any healthcare setting, only trained professionals should perform procedures such as wound suturing. Even a seemingly simple stitch requires knowledge of:

  • Sterile techniques
  • Proper wound assessment
  • Risk of infection
  • Tissue handling and healing

Allowing untrained individuals to carry out such procedures can increase the risk of infection, improper healing, and long term complications. Therefore, the real-life Munna Bhai incident has raised valid questions about patient safety and hospital protocols.

Hospital Responds to the Controversy

Following the backlash, hospital authorities issued a clarification. Deputy Superintendent Dr Ashok Kumar Tiwari explained that the hospital has been struggling with a shortage of staff for a long time.
He stated that several key positions, including operation theatre assistants and dressers, remain vacant. As a result, the hospital often depends on limited nursing staff to manage emergency cases.
On the day of the incident, multiple critically injured patients arrived simultaneously. According to the administration, the guard assisted under a doctor’s supervision when one patient required urgent attention due to heavy bleeding.

A Larger Public Health Issue

Many government hospitals, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, face:

  • Staff shortages
  • Overcrowding
  • Limited resources
  • Delayed recruitment

While emergency situations demand quick decisions, maintaining patient safety must remain a priority. Incidents like this underline the urgent need for better staffing, stricter enforcement of medical protocols, and improved infrastructure.

Conclusion

This incident is not just a viral moment but a serious warning. It reflects the pressure faced by healthcare workers, yet also exposes critical gaps that could endanger lives.
Patients rely on hospitals for safe and professional care. Therefore, strengthening the system is not optional. It is essential.
