Lucknow Hospital Treats Rare Kidney Case in 19-Month-Old
Lucknow doctors have successfully treated a toddler suffering from rare kidney and gallbladder disorders, offering hope to families facing complex congenital conditions. The patient, a 19-month-old child from Nepal, had been denied surgery earlier because of his age and the seriousness of his illness. However, specialists at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, stepped in with a carefully planned approach and achieved a positive outcome
A rare and serious medical condition
The child was born with a horseshoe kidney, a rare condition in which both kidneys are joined together. Along with this, he had blockages at the points where urine normally flows from each kidney into the urinary tubes. Because of these blockages, urine could not drain properly. As a result, both kidneys became dangerously swollen and filled much of the child’s abdomen.
At the same time, doctors found stones in the gallbladder as well as in the main bile duct. Together, these findings made it a case of rare kidney and gallbladder disorders in a child, which is uncommon and medically challenging, especially at such a young age.
Earlier treatment attempts had failed
Before coming to India, the family consulted multiple hospitals in Nepal. However, surgeons there felt that operating on such a small child with multiple organ involvement carried a very high risk. With the child’s kidney function worsening, the family decided to seek advanced care in Lucknow.
What the doctors did during surgery
During a nearly four-hour operation, the urology team used minimally invasive laparoscopic methods to remove the blockages in both kidneys. They also placed small tubes called stents to keep the urine flowing freely while healing occurred.
At the same time, the gastrointestinal surgery team addressed the gallbladder problem using laparoscopy. Meanwhile, the gastroenterology team managed the bile duct stones with medicines and stayed ready to perform an endoscopic procedure if needed.
This combined effort allowed doctors to treat the rare kidney and gallbladder disorders in a child safely and effectively.
Fast recovery and hopeful outcome
Despite the seriousness of his condition, the child responded well after surgery. His recovery was smooth, and doctors discharged him within four days. The successful treatment reduced the immediate risk of kidney failure and relieved the gallbladder obstruction.
Conclusion
This case highlights how advanced surgical planning and teamwork can save young lives, even in the most complex situations. It also shows that early referral to specialised centres can make a crucial difference for children born with rare kidney and gallbladder disorders.
For both doctors and families, the outcome stands as a reminder that timely intervention and coordinated care can turn high-risk cases into success stories.
