84 Drug Batches Fail Quality Test – Are You at Risk?

In a recent inspection conducted by the drug control authorities across India, a concerning discovery has been made regarding the quality of certain medications. As per the latest report from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), 84 batches of drugs have been identified as ‘not-of-standard quality’ (NSQ).

Categories Affected

The affected batches include medications commonly prescribed for conditions such as Antacids, high cholesterol, diabetes, and bacterial infections.

Inspection Findings

The CDSCO regularly inspects drug batches to ensure they meet specified quality parameters. Samples are tested rigorously, and any failure to meet these standards results in the identification of NSQ drugs.

Regulatory Actions

Following these findings, the CDSCO issues alerts to ensure such medications are swiftly identified and removed from the market. This action is taken in collaboration with state regulators to safeguard public health.

New Guidelines Implementation

Recently, the CDSCO introduced new guidelines aimed at enhancing the inspection process. These include requirements for drug inspectors to collect and forward samples promptly to laboratories for testing. Specifically, inspectors are mandated to collect at least 10 samples monthly, consisting of nine drug samples and one sample each of cosmetics or medical devices.
In instances where samples are collected from rural or distant locations, they must be forwarded to laboratories by the next day at the latest.

Conclusion

The CDSCO’s proactive measures underscore its commitment to maintaining the quality and safety of pharmaceuticals available in the market. By enforcing stringent guidelines and promptly addressing quality concerns, regulatory authorities aim to uphold public trust in healthcare standards across the country.
