Employee Dies of Cardiac Arrest Minutes After Sick Leave
A 40-year-old employee named Shankar died of sudden cardiac arrest just ten minutes after applying for a day’s sick leave. Shankar, who had been working with his company for six years, was remembered by his manager, KV Iyyer, as a disciplined man who lived a healthy lifestyle, stayed away from smoking and alcohol, and was considered “fit.”
On the morning of the tragedy, at 8:37 am, Shankar sent a routine message to his manager:
“Sir, due to heavy back pain, I am unable to come today. So please grant me leave.”
His boss responded kindly with, “Ok, take a rest.” However, by 8:47 am, Shankar collapsed at home from sudden cardiac arrest.
Manager’s Shock and Painful Discovery
Recalling the devastating news, Iyyer shared his experience on social media. He wrote that when he first received Shankar’s leave request, it seemed like a normal start to the workday. But by 11 am, he received a phone call that left him shaken. Shankar had passed away.
Unable to believe it, Iyyer immediately contacted another colleague to confirm the news and get Shankar’s home address. When he reached the residence, his worst fears were confirmed: Shankar was no more. The sudden loss left his family, colleagues, and community in complete shock.
Why Sudden Cardiac Arrest Cases Are Rising
Shankar’s death has raised serious concerns, especially since he was young, healthy, and led a disciplined life. Unfortunately, his case is not isolated. Many people in the 35–45 age group have been reported to die suddenly from cardiac arrest in recent years.
Social media users highlighted this worrying trend, with one commenting, “We are hearing such cases too often now, even among those with a healthy lifestyle. What are we missing here?” Another pointed out a possible link to the post-COVID era, noting, “Nobody is paying attention to this, but sudden cardiac arrest is becoming a national issue. Many such deaths are even caught on CCTV. This must be addressed urgently by healthcare experts and policymakers.”
Conclusion
This tragic case underlines the unpredictability of sudden cardiac arrest and its increasing occurrence in relatively young adults. Health experts stress that while lifestyle choices matter, other hidden factors such as stress, genetic predisposition, post-viral complications, and undiagnosed heart conditions may also play a role.

With rising reports of similar incidents, medical professionals urge individuals to remain alert to warning signs such as chest pain, unusual fatigue, palpitations, or unexplained back pain. At the same time, they call on healthcare authorities to prioritise awareness, screening, and timely intervention to reduce the growing burden of sudden cardiac arrest in India.
