Doctors Remove Rare Tooth Growth From Eye in Bihar
Doctors at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, recently performed a surgery that stunned the medical community. In a case described as one of the rarest in India, a tooth was removed from a patient’s eye. The operation took place on August 11, 2025, and the patient has now fully recovered.
How the Case Began
The 42-year-old patient, a resident of Siwan district in Bihar (name withheld), first complained of bleeding from his upper teeth in October 2024. Local treatment helped him recover by December, but a few months later, new symptoms appeared.
By March 2025, he noticed a painful lump near his right eye. Alongside this, he suffered from blurred vision, dizziness, and constant fatigue, which disrupted his daily life. On medical advice, he visited IGIMS Patna for further evaluation.
What Doctors Found
At IGIMS, specialists conducted a CBCT scan. The results were startling. What looked like a lump was actually a tooth developing inside the eye socket. This unusual finding explained the patient’s symptoms and required urgent surgical removal.
Why Can a Tooth Grow in the Eye?
According to Dr. Nimmi Singh, Head of the Oral Medicine and Radiology (OMR) Department at IGIMS, this is an example of a developmental anomaly.
During fetal growth, the cells that form teeth can sometimes travel to unusual areas of the body. If these cells survive, they may later grow into a tooth in locations other than the mouth, such as the nose, sinuses, or, in this extraordinary case, the eye.
Another senior doctor added that such misplacements occur when facial and body structures develop simultaneously in the womb. Though extremely rare, these anomalies highlight the complex nature of human development.
A Rare Medical Phenomenon
Globally, only a handful of such cases have ever been reported. In India, experts believe just two to three similar cases have been documented so far. The Patna surgery is therefore considered a significant medical milestone.
Conclusion
The tooth extracted from a patient’s eye at IGIMS Patna highlights the rare and unpredictable nature of developmental anomalies. With the help of advanced diagnostic imaging and expert surgical care, the patient has made a full recovery. This extraordinary case is expected to stand out as one of the rarest yet most significant achievements in Indian medical science.
