10-Month-Old Baby Becomes Kerala’s Youngest Organ Donor

Kerala’s youngest organ donor, Aalin Sherin Abraham, just 10 months old, has helped save four lives. Despite an unimaginable personal loss, her family chose organ donation, turning tragedy into hope for multiple patients waiting for transplants.
Aalin, from Pathanamthitta district, became Kerala’s youngest organ donor after doctors confirmed brain death following severe injuries from a road accident. Her organs will now support critically ill patients in Thiruvananthapuram.

Accident and Emergency Care

The accident happened on February 5 while Aalin was travelling with her mother and maternal grandparents from Kottayam to Thiruvalla. The baby lost consciousness at the scene. Meanwhile, her mother and grandparents also suffered serious injuries.
Doctors first admitted Aalin to Changanacherry Government General Hospital. Later, medical teams shifted her to St Thomas Hospital, Changanacherry, and then to Believers Hospital, Thiruvalla. As her condition remained critical, specialists transferred her to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on February 6 for advanced care.
Hospital officials said doctors began intensive treatment immediately after her arrival. However, despite all efforts, they could not reverse the severe brain injury. On Friday afternoon, physicians formally declared her brain dead.

Parents Give Consent for Organ Donation

In an extraordinary act of compassion, Aalin’s father, Arun Abraham, agreed to donate her organs. Her mother is Sherin Ann John. Both parents are natives of Mallapally.

Following consent, the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation coordinated the donation process.

Dr Noble Gracious, executive director of the program, confirmed the organ allocation:

  • The heart valve will go to the Sree Chitra Institute
  • The liver will be transplanted at KIMS Hospital
  • Doctors will allocate both kidneys to a patient at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College
  • The eyes will be sent to the regional eye bank to help restore vision

Because of this single decision, four people will now receive a second chance at life, while others may benefit from tissue donation.

This act makes Aalin Kerala the youngest organ donor and one of the youngest in the country to give life through donation.

Health Minister Pays Tribute

Kerala Health Minister Veena George publicly thanked the family for their brave choice.
In a Facebook post, she expressed sorrow over Aalin’s death and praised her parents for thinking of others during their darkest moment. She said the government stands with the grieving family and honours their humanity.

Conclusion

Medical experts say pediatric organ donation remains rare, yet it can transform outcomes for children and adults waiting for transplants. Aalin’s story highlights how one family’s courage can ripple through many lives.
As Kerala’s youngest organ donor, her legacy goes far beyond numbers. She leaves behind a powerful message about compassion, awareness, and the life-saving impact of timely organ donation.
Her short life has now become a source of healing for others and a reminder that even in loss, hope can grow.
