McDonald’s Jaipur Caught Using Toxic Oil, Rotten Tomatoes Found

In a sudden food safety drive, officials detected high TPC cooking oil at the McDonald’sGaurav Tower outlet, raising serious concerns about customer health.

The inspection took place on Monday at Gaurav Tower, where food safety officers checked the quality of refined palm oil used to fry French fries and other items. Importantly, tests showed that the oil had crossed safe limits.

Total Polar Compounds (TPC) measure how much cooking oil has broken down after repeated heating. Experts consider anything above 25 percent unsafe.

However, officers found:

  • 28 percent TPC in oil used for non vegetarian items
  • 31 percent TPC in oil used for vegetarian food

Both readings exceeded the legal limit.

Why high TPC cooking oil is dangerous

Speaking to the media, Dr Manish Mittal, Chief Medical Health Officer (Jaipur II), explained that TPC directly reflects oil quality.
“When TPC rises above 25 percent, the oil becomes toxic. It starts forming cancer causing substances, and trans fat levels increase sharply. This significantly raises the risk of heart disease,” he said.
Moreover, the inspection team noticed that the oil had turned extremely dark and was unfit for use. Despite this, staff continued frying food after heating it to around 150 degrees Celsius, from morning until night.
As a result, officials immediately destroyed about 40 litres of used oil on the spot.

Restaurant ordered to switch to fresh oil immediately

During the inspection, restaurant manager Sambhav Bhardwaj was present. Authorities instructed him to replace the old oil with fresh stock right away.
In addition, the health department will issue an improvement notice under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Officials will decide further action after laboratory reports of collected samples arrive.
When contacted later, the restaurant management declined to comment on the findings.

Rotten vegetables also found in cold storage

Besides the high TPC cooking oil, officers uncovered another hygiene lapse.
They discovered rotten tomatoes stored in plastic crates inside the cold room. Consequently, the team destroyed around 40 kilograms of spoiled tomatoes during the inspection.

Conclusion

Repeatedly heated cooking oil can silently harm the body over time. Regular intake of food prepared in degraded oil may contribute to:

  • Heart disease
  • Higher bad cholesterol
  • Inflammation
  • Long term cancer risk

Health experts advise consumers to stay alert to food quality and report concerns to local authorities.

This incident once again highlights the importance of routine checks and strict compliance with food safety rules, especially at high footfall restaurants.
