5 Simple Exercises That May Help Boost Fertility

Summary: Here are 5 exercises that can help improve fertility, based on some research.

Forms of Exercise

Infertility is on the rise; many couples are unable to conceive, have undergone miscarriages or have reached the age where conception is unsafe. There are fertility treatments available that can cause conception. For those who want to conceive via IVF, women are prescribed medication to prepare their bodies for the procedure.
Some exercises may help a woman conceive naturally or prepare her for IVF or other allied procedures, though medical advice is essential before embarking on any form of exercise.

1) Brisk walking: Brisk walking is a simple exercise that can be practised. It improves insulin sensitivity and aids the ovulation process and weight management in women, particularly those suffering from PCOS, obesity or who are overweight. It is safe to continue when you are pregnant, but only after taking medical advice.

Method: Brisk walking for 30-45 minutes for the most part of the week.

2) Aerobic exercises: light jogging, swimming, cycling. Aerobic exercises increase the body’s capacity to utilise insulin and lose visceral fat. Women can maintain normal androgen hormonal levels, which will increase the chances of pregnancy.

Method: Moderate aerobic exercises like cycling, swimming, and low-impact dance for 150 minutes during the week.

3) Strength training: Strength training/resistance training helps to develop muscle mass and improves the body’s capacity to use insulin and manage weight. Lipid profiles improve and lead to better fertility. It can effectively treat anovulatory infertility, generally seen in women who are obese or suffer from metabolic syndrome.

Method: Work out for 2-3 sessions a week: squats, lunges, push-ups, resistance bands and light weights.

4) Yoga: Practice Yoga with gentle stretching movements, breathing techniques and relaxation methods. This will control oxidative stress, balance hormones, improve ovarian functions, regulate menstrual cycles and reduce stress. There is restorative yoga, prenatal yoga and fertility yoga that can be practised under the guidance of a professional Yoga instructor (after consultation with your medical practitioner).

Method: Practice Yoga for 30-45 minutes every day.

5) Mind-body programs (yoga – relaxation – counselling): A combination of simple Yoga with breathing techniques, with individual or group counselling. These programs are used to alleviate the extreme stress noticed in couples undergoing infertility treatments due to imbalanced hormones and sexual functions. It also makes them focus on their treatment plans and follow them.

Method: Attend the mind-body programs a few times every week

Conclusion

These exercises are a small part of the bigger picture. The results may differ from person to person. Medical advice, medication and exercise are all parts that complete the picture.

It is recommended to take the advice of your healthcare professional, based on your age,  health and medical history.
