7-Month Pregnant Woman Killed by Husband in Gudamba
A 24-year-old man attacked his pregnant wife with a sharp weapon in Dasouli village, Gudamba, leading to her death on the spot. The incident also left his mother injured when she attempted to intervene. This shocking act of domestic violence not only underscores the dangers within strained family environments but also brings urgent attention to unaddressed mental health issues.
The Incident
According to police reports, the accused, Ankur Lodhi (24), lived in a rented home with his wife Neelam (22), who was seven months pregnant, along with his parents, sister, and stepbrother. On the day of the tragedy, their landlord had organised a community meal (bhandara) after Vishwakarma Puja, where Ankur was seen helping until about 4:30 p.m.
Shortly after returning home, he reportedly engaged in a heated argument with Neelam. In a sudden outburst of rage, Ankur picked up a baanka (a sharp-edged tool) and repeatedly attacked her. The assault was so brutal that it caused severe injuries, including amputation of her wrist and arm. Unfortunately, Neelam succumbed to her injuries immediately.
Intervention and Arrest
On hearing her daughter-in-law’s cries, Ankur’s mother, Phoolmati, rushed in to help but was also attacked. Despite her injuries, neighbours quickly overpowered Ankur and handed him over to the police. He is now in custody, and an investigation is ongoing.
Mental Health and Domestic Violence
This incident illustrates how domestic conflicts, when combined with poor anger management and untreated mental health issues, can escalate to extreme violence. Young adults facing financial pressures, interpersonal stress, or unresolved emotional trauma are often at higher risk of impulsive and aggressive behaviour.
Furthermore, pregnancy is a sensitive phase requiring emotional and physical support. Violence during this period not only endangers the mother but also the unborn child. Such tragedies emphasise the urgent need for accessible mental health counselling, anger management interventions, and community awareness programs.
Conclusion
The Gudamba domestic violence case is a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and neglected mental health. While justice will follow its course, the broader lesson lies in strengthening preventive mental health care and ensuring safe environments for vulnerable individuals, especially pregnant women.
