Teen Girl Dies After ‘Forced’ Separation From Partner

In May 2025, an 18-year-old woman named Chandrika Chaudhary and her 23-year-old partner, Haresh Chaudhary, decided to live together. Their relationship was against the wishes of Chandrika’s family. To protect themselves legally, the couple signed a formal live-in relationship agreement in Ahmedabad before moving out of Gujarat, first to Madhya Pradesh and then to Rajasthan.

Intervention by Police and Family

On June 12, their peaceful life came to a sudden halt. A group consisting of three Gujarat police officers and a relative of Chandrika located the couple at a hotel in Rajasthan. The police arrested Haresh in connection with an old Prohibition Act case, while Chandrika was handed over to her uncle.
Haresh later alleged that Chandrika was taken to the Tharad police station, where she clearly expressed her unwillingness to return to her parents’ home. According to him, she was pressured by officers, who allegedly threatened to implicate him in more legal trouble unless she falsely cooperated.

Habeas Corpus Petition and Sudden Death

After spending a few days in jail, Haresh was released. He immediately began looking for Chandrika but found no trace of her. Concerned for her safety, he filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court, demanding her appearance in court.
However, just two days before the scheduled hearing, on June 25, Haresh was informed that Chandrika had died that very day. On June 27, the court took her death certificate on record and closed the case.

Unexplained Death and Lack of Postmortem

Chandrika’s family claimed she died in her sleep due to natural causes, possibly a heart attack. However, the circumstances surrounding her death raised suspicion. Most notably, her body was cremated quickly and without any notification to the police, eliminating any opportunity for a medical autopsy.
Because the cremation took place without police involvement, no Accidental Death (AD) report was filed, and no cause of death was officially confirmed.

Complaint and Ongoing Investigation

Haresh filed a complaint, alleging that Chandrika may have been killed by her family due to their opposition to the relationship. He submitted an application outlining his concerns to the Chief Minister, the Home Minister, the DGP, and various human rights and women’s commissions in the state.
Initially, a junior police officer conducted a basic inquiry. However, after Haresh raised concerns about the credibility of the initial findings, a more senior officer was assigned. On July 31, Banaskantha SP Akshayraj Makwana ordered a deeper investigation.
The case is now being investigated by ASP Suman Nala from the Danta division. She has started questioning Chandrika’s family members and continues to explore all available leads.

Digital Evidence Raises More Questions

Adding further complexity, Haresh revealed that while he was in jail, Chandrika had sent him two Instagram messages on June 17. In those messages, she expressed fear for her life, saying she might be killed or forcibly married to someone else. Haresh read these messages only after his release, by which time it was too late.

How Emotional Stress Can Turn Deadly

Being suddenly separated from someone you trust, especially under pressure or threats, can cause extreme emotional shock. For young people like Chandrika, this kind of stress can lead to severe anxiety, fear, and a sense of helplessness. When the brain feels unsafe and unsupported, it can affect both mental and physical health. Without care or emotional support, such distress may cause panic, depression, or even trigger serious health problems. Her case shows how emotional trauma, when ignored, can have tragic consequences.

Conclusion

As of now, over a month has passed since Chandrika’s death. While her family claims natural causes, her partner insists she was at risk. The swift cremation, lack of medical verification, and her final messages continue to raise red flags. The case underscores the need for stronger legal safeguards for individuals in live-in relationships, and for better accountability in police procedures involving vulnerable individuals.
