Can You Afford Healthcare? 90% Indians Say Yes

A new report reveals a promising shift in India’s workforce: more than 90% of employees feel confident about affording healthcare for themselves and their families. However, beneath this optimism, certain challenges persist.

What the Report Says

The report, released by Mercer Marsh Benefits, surveyed over 18,000 employees across 17 global markets, including India. It explored how employees feel about their current healthcare benefits, what they expect from their employers, and how those expectations are evolving.

Confidence Is High, But Concerns Remain

While 92% of Indian employees say they can manage their healthcare expenses, many still delay treatment. Why?

The top two reasons are:

  • Financial pressure
  • Long waiting times for appointments or treatment

This suggests that even when people have insurance or coverage, hidden costs and delays are making them postpone necessary care.

Workplace Benefits Are Evolving

The report highlights that Indian employees are increasingly valuing flexibility, personalization, and long-term support in their healthcare benefits. Today’s workers want more than just coverage—they want care that adapts to their personal and family needs.

Notably, more than 80% of employees who had access to personalised health packages reported feeling that their employer genuinely cared about their well-being.

Trusted Healthcare Partner

One of the most encouraging insights is that employers are emerging as the most trusted source of affordable and quality healthcare. This opens a valuable opportunity for organizations to strengthen trust, loyalty, and retention.

The report urges companies to:

  • Offer customized benefits packages
  • Provide preventive care and regular health screenings
  • Include outpatient (OPD) support
  • Adopt telemedicine and digital health platforms
  • Partner with local healthcare providers for easier access

The Focus Is Shifting Toward Long-Term Wellness

As life expectancy increases, employees are no longer just thinking about the present. The report emphasizes a shift in mindset: people are planning for healthier, longer lives—even into retirement.
According to Sanjay Kedia, CEO of Marsh McLennan India:
“This is a turning point for employers in India. As careers extend, companies can create lasting impact by helping their workforce prepare for long-term health and financial security.”

Conclusion

India’s workforce is growing more health-aware and future-focused. While confidence in affording healthcare is strong, the real need is for accessible, personalized, and timely care. Employers who respond to this shift with forward-thinking benefit strategies will not only meet employee expectations but also build stronger, healthier teams for the future.
