Delhi Metro’s Pink Line Hit by Cable Theft Gang
Delhi Police recently arrested a group of thieves responsible for disrupting metro services by stealing copper cables from the Pink Line. The gang, led by Govind Kumar—nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ for his exceptional climbing skills—used clever tactics to gain access to metro tracks and steal valuable electrical cables. Their criminal activities, however, came to an end when police apprehended three key members.
How the Thefts Were Carried Out
The first reported theft occurred on February 3, 2024, when Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials noticed missing copper cables between Majlis Park and Azadpur stations. As additional thefts were reported, authorities launched an investigation and registered an FIR. A special police team was formed to track down the culprits.
The gang took advantage of security loopholes by using construction debris as makeshift ladders to climb onto metro tracks. Once there, they cut through barbed wire and swiftly removed sections of copper cable. The stolen material was then transported in a Bolero pickup truck to avoid suspicion.
Police Investigation and Arrests
With the help of CCTV footage and advanced surveillance techniques, police identified the gang’s methods and tracked their movements. Acting on intelligence, authorities launched raids at multiple locations, leading to the arrest of Govind Kumar (24) and his accomplice, Sushil Kumar (29). Their getaway vehicle was also seized. Later, a third gang member, Aas Mohammad (29), was arrested.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in multiple metro cable thefts, including incidents near Dwarka Metro Station. Police recovered 80 meters of stolen copper cable and are now working to locate other gang members.
A Well-Planned Operation
According to police, the gang operated in a highly organized manner, making it difficult to track them. Govind Kumar, the leader, earned the nickname ‘Spiderman’ due to his agility in scaling metro pillars and tracks with ease.
Despite their precise methods, law enforcement successfully cracked the case using technical surveillance and pattern analysis. Authorities are continuing their investigation to dismantle the entire network involved in these thefts.
Conclusion
This incident has raised concerns about metro security, prompting authorities to review surveillance measures and tighten security around metro tracks. Police urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near metro infrastructure.
With these arrests, Delhi Metro commuters can expect a more secure and uninterrupted travel experience as authorities work towards preventing future incidents of theft.
