Kerala CM Orders Inquiry Into Contaminated Food Kits
Background of the Incident
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued new guidelines to safeguard consumer health by ensuring that food delivered by e-commerce platforms meets minimum shelf life requirements. These guidelines, directed at major e-commerce food companies like Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket, are designed to enhance food safety standards and promote responsible practices across the industry.
Investigation and Concerns
The Chief Minister’s directive for a probe follows a report submitted by the Chief Secretary, highlighting severe concerns about the safety and quality of these supplies. The investigation will focus on determining whether the contaminated food kits were sourced from expired stocks or tampered with before distribution. A preliminary report is expected soon, outlining the specifics of the contamination and responsible parties.
Community Outrage and Protest
The incident sparked protests led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), whose members gathered outside the Meppadi Gram Panchayat office on November 7, 2024. Protesters voiced their dismay at the poor quality of supplies, not just food but also clothing, which they claimed were unfit for distribution. Tensions escalated as some activists attempted to enter the panchayat president’s office, resulting in a confrontation with local officials and police.
Calls for Accountability
DYFI leaders have criticized the United Democratic Front (UDF)-led panchayat for failing to ensure the safety and quality of supplies provided to disaster survivors. They expressed frustration over what they consider neglect by the local administration, which they believe failed in its duty to guarantee essential support for those who have already endured significant hardships due to the July 30 landslides.
Panchayat's Response
Following the protests, officials from the Meppadi Gram Panchayat expressed regret over the incident and assured the community that proper, edible food kits would be distributed to beneficiaries by November 9, 2024. Panchayat officials also promised to take steps to prevent such issues from arising in future aid distributions, pledging to restore trust in the community.
