Rising Cardiac Arrests: A Wake-Up Call for Young Indians

Introduction

The increasing cases of cardiac arrests among young adults in India is a growing concern. This alarming trend indicates the need for individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The Role of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and lung disease are responsible for 74% of global deaths. In India, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have dramatically risen, with cases jumping from 25.7 million in 1990 to 64 million by 2023. Worryingly, nearly half of these cases are found in individuals under the age of 55.

Stress and Unhealthy Lifestyles

A fast-paced lifestyle, pressure to excel professionally, poor eating habits, and lack of exercise are major contributors to the rise in heart-related problems. The constant stress many young professionals face leads to higher levels of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. Prolonged elevated cortisol levels can worsen underlying health conditions, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Why Young Adults Should Take NCDs Seriously

There is a common misconception that being young provides immunity against conditions like diabetes or heart disease. However, NCDs often develop gradually, sometimes over decades. Bad habits picked up in the 20s and 30s can lead to serious health issues later in life. Many young professionals, focused on career-building, often overlook their health and continue unhealthy practices.

Hidden Dangers in Diets

Even those who are aware of the risks of stress and sugar consumption often struggle to make the right dietary choices. Many foods labelled as “healthy,” such as smoothies, energy bars, and flavored yoghurts, contain hidden sugars that can contribute to poor health outcomes. High sugar consumption is linked to the development of NCDs and worsens stress.

Mental and Physical Health Must Go Hand-in-Hand

In addition to physical health, mental well-being is equally important but is often neglected. Chronic stress, if not managed, can lead to high blood pressure, inflammation, and increased cortisol levels, all of which contribute to the development of heart disease. Many young adults are so focused on their careers that they fail to take care of their mental health, further exacerbating the problem.

Prevention is Key

Rather than relying on youth as a safeguard against serious health issues, young people should focus on prevention. Cardiac arrests, diabetes, and other NCDs can strike at any age if left unchecked. By adopting healthier lifestyles, managing stress, and paying attention to both mental and physical health, young adults can safeguard their future well-being.
