8 Students Hospitalised After Eyes Glued with Fevikwik
A shocking incident has raised serious questions about student safety and supervision in Odisha’s ashram schools. Early on Friday morning, eight students suffered a medical emergency when their eyes were glued shut with Fevikwik adhesive. The case of students’ eyes glued with Fevikwik in an Odisha school hostel has now triggered medical intervention, public outrage, and calls for strict action.
What Happened
The incident took place in an ashram school in Salaguda village, Phiringia block, Kandhamal district. After finishing dinner on Thursday night, students went to sleep in their hostel as usual. However, during the night, some of their hostel mates allegedly applied Fevikwik on their eyelids while they were asleep.
When the students woke up the next morning, they were unable to open their eyes, which caused immediate panic. Their screams alerted others in the hostel. Teacher Premlata Sahu arrived quickly and helped arrange for them to be taken to the Gochhapada community health centre.
Medical Treatment: Removing the Glue
At the health centre, doctors examined the students and confirmed that the substance blocking their eyes was industrial glue. Immediate medical steps were taken by carefully washing the eyes with antiseptic solutions and warm water, aiming to safely dissolve and remove the adhesive without causing damage.
Due to the risk of chemical injury and potential eye complications, seven of the students were referred to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Phulbani for further treatment. Doctors at DHH confirmed that all affected students were now stable and recovering well, with no permanent damage reported so far.
Concerns Over School Safety and Supervision
This incident has raised widespread concern about the safety and supervision systems in Odisha’s ashram schools. The school where the event occurred has two hostels, each housing up to 100 students. Shockingly, the students responsible for applying Fevikwik have not yet been identified.
Local village leader Rohit Kanhar expressed strong criticism of the school management, claiming that teachers often do not attend school regularly. He further explained that repeated complaints about poor supervision were ignored by the district administration. Kanhar has called for a thorough investigation and strict action against the negligent staff.
Official Response and Ongoing Investigation
Following the emergency, District Welfare Officer (DWO) RN Mishra visited the DHH to monitor the students’ condition. He confirmed that medical care is ongoing and all necessary treatment is being provided. Mishra also assured that a full inquiry would be launched to identify those responsible and prevent future incidents.
Conclusion
The incident involving students’ eyes glued with Fevikwik in an Odisha school hostel emphasises the urgent need for improved safety protocols and strict supervision in residential school settings. It also highlights the importance of quick medical action to prevent long-term harm in chemical or adhesive eye injuries.
Schools must prioritise the health and safety of children by maintaining constant supervision, implementing clear rules, and ensuring timely medical support during emergencies.
