7-Year-Old Locked in Freezer for Hours in UP Village

In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about child safety and physical harm, a child locked in freezer for nearly five hours was rescued in Sheikhpur Khichra village of Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district. The seven‑year‑old boy was allegedly confined inside a deep freezer by a local workshop owner who suspected him of taking items without permission.
Within the first few hours of confinement, his distress and panic were caught on video, which later spread widely on social media. The visual evidence has prompted urgent attention from both medical professionals and child protection advocates.

What Happened: Sequence of Events

On Tuesday, villagers found the young boy crying uncontrollably after he had been inside the freezer for almost five hours. According to local police, the accused, identified as Mohd Azad, runs a nearby car workshop. Believing that the child had stolen tools or goods from his workplace, Azad reportedly locked him inside the freezer in a misguided attempt to punish him.
Soon after, people from the community broke open the freezer and pulled the child out. The child was visibly emotionally shaken and physically cold due to prolonged confinement in the low‑temperature environment.

Police Response and Legal Action

Avneesh Kumar, the Station House Officer, confirmed that police took immediate action after the video went viral. Officers registered a First Information Report against Azad under Section 170 of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to arrest to prevent the commission of a cognizable offence. They later arrested him and sent him to jail on the same day.
In describing the situation, SHO Kumar stated that the accused “suspected the child of stealing and wanted to teach him a lesson,” leading to the extreme act of keeping a child locked in freezer.

Potential Health Consequences of Freezer Confinement

Medical experts emphasize that keeping a child in a freezer environment poses significant risks:

  • Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can rapidly lower body heat, especially in young children.
  • Respiratory Issues: Cold air can irritate breathing passages, increasing the risk of breathing difficulty.
  • Emotional Trauma: Being isolated and afraid can lead to long‑term psychological distress.

Children are more vulnerable than adults to sudden temperature changes. The body of a seven‑year‑old cools down faster, which can cause internal organs to become stressed.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Beyond physical harm, being confined in a cold, dark, and restrictive space can trigger anxiety, fear, and post‑traumatic stress symptoms. Early assessment by mental health professionals is crucial for recovery. Parents, caregivers, and healthcare providers are encouraged to monitor the child for signs of nightmares, withdrawal, or increased fear of enclosed spaces.

Conclusion

This incident highlights the severe dangers of leaving a child locked in freezer as a form of punishment or suspicion. It underscores the importance of:

  • Immediate medical evaluation after such exposure
  • Awareness of cold‑related illnesses in children
  • Stronger community reporting and child protection systems

If a child has been exposed to extremely cold environments, seek medical advice promptly, even if symptoms appear mild at first.
