17-Year-Old Girl Dies After Mistaking Rat Poison for Vibhuti

A tragic case of accidental rat poison ingestion has led to the death of a 17 year old schoolgirl in the Lambakheda area of Eintkhedi. The incident has shocked the local community and raised fresh concerns about keeping toxic substances inside homes, especially near prayer spaces.
The teenager, Vaishnavi Sen, reportedly mistook rat poison for vibhuti (holy ash) after performing her morning prayers. She later told police what had happened while she was receiving medical care.

What happened

According to police, Vaishnavi, a Class 12 student at a private school, completed her daily puja at the small temple inside her home on the morning of February 7.
Soon after, she unknowingly consumed rat poison that had been kept in the prayer area. She believed it was sacred ash.
Later in the day, after returning from her coaching class, her health suddenly worsened. Family members rushed her for treatment, but despite medical efforts, she did not survive.
The case highlights how accidental rat poison ingestion can occur in ordinary household settings, often within seconds and without warning.

Why the Poison Was in the Prayer Room

Speaking to reporters, Eintkhedi SHO Ashish Sapre said the girl’s mother had placed the poison in the temple area to control rats that frequently entered the prayer room.
Unfortunately, this well-intentioned step turned fatal.
Police confirmed that Vaishnavi clearly explained the mix-up in her statement before her condition deteriorated.

Small Mistakes Can Become Medical Emergencies

Medical experts say rat poison acts quickly on the body. Depending on the type, it can damage internal organs, affect blood clotting, or cause severe breathing problems.
In many cases of accidental rat poison ingestion, early symptoms may appear mild, such as nausea or dizziness. However, serious complications often develop hours later.
Doctors stress that any suspected poisoning requires immediate hospital care, even if the person feels “okay” at first.

A Wake-Up Call for Families

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder for households to store chemicals and poisons far away from food, medicines, and religious items.

Simple safety steps can save lives:

  • Never keep poison in worship areas or kitchens
  • Store toxic products in clearly labelled containers
  • Keep them locked and out of children’s reach
  • Seek emergency medical help at the first sign of poisoning

Public health specialists say awareness is key, as most poisoning cases happen inside homes and are entirely preventable.

Conclusion

The death of Vaishnavi Sen underscores the silent danger of accidental rat poison ingestion and the urgent need for safer storage practices. What began as a routine morning prayer ended in an unimaginable loss, reminding all of us how quickly everyday hazards can turn deadly.
If you suspect poisoning, do not wait. Reach the nearest emergency department immediately. Early treatment can make the difference between life and death.
