Pune’s Artificial Limb Centre Gives New Life to 11-Year-Old from J&K
Summary
An advanced prosthetic limb was given to an eleven year old girl hailing from Jammu & Kashmir, giving her a second chance to walk again.
The patient
An eleven year old girl named Jyotidevi Joginder Singh, from Juthala village, located on the India-Pakistan border, in Jammu & Kashmir sustained physical injury and lost her right leg (below the knee) in a landslide that occurred in her village on August 10, 2025. This had a devastating effect on her and her family.
The injury
She was seriously injured, which led to amputation of her right leg, carried out at a private Pathankot hospital. She had to be carried everywhere and was unable to attend school for months. Seeing how sad she was as opposed to her former energetic and playful nature, her parents were resigned to the fact that she would never walk again or regain her old happy nature.
The parents
The father Joginder Singh, is a farm worker and her mother Somadevi were not financially secure. This incident took a toll on their financial condition as they barely managed to gather funds for the amputation. The borrowed money from their friends and relatives for the amputation procedure, and could not afford a prosthetic limb for their daughter.
The assistance
The soldiers from the local infantry unit of the Indian Army visited Jyotidevi and ensured their support and assistance by way of getting her transferred to the Artificial Limb Centre (ALC), Pune, which is one of the premium institutions for prosthetic rehabilitation.
A soldier from the Indian Army accompanied Jyotidevi and her parents from their village to the ALC, Pune, for smoother hassle-free travel.
The ALC
The ALC at Pune, is dedicated to prosthetic and orthotic care of soldiers as well as civilians. It is renowned for its innovations in artificial limb technology and extensive rehabilitation programmes.
The procedure
The medical team of ALC gauged her age, weight, condition and level of amputation before planning for a custom-made prosthetic limb.
The prosthetic limb
The custom-made state-of-the-art prosthetic limb is made with advanced carbonfibre components, designed for greater comfort, durability and flexibility. It is light-weight with a responsive design, which will permit her to walk, run and play easily and resume all her daily activities.
The Indian Army
The Indian Army, in addition to protecting the country’s borders, also undertakes humanitarian work for the benefit of the community, in the remote and border areas where healthcare is a challenge and not financially viable for the rural villagers. The Indian Army proposes to set up mobile units for provision of basic prosthetic limbs in the adjoining military installations and on-site distribution.
The outcome
The outcome of the surgery was positive as it made up for the amputated limb. Jyotidevi was happy as she can now resume her daily activities like going to school and go out to play. She said that she loves the Indian Army and her parents are grateful to the Indian Army do their assistance.

A salute to the Indian Army for this gesture. This shows once again how our army protects us not only from enemies along the border but assists the residents of the rural border areas in terms of safety and healthcare.
