Two Men Found Dead After Cooking Chole: Here's What Happened

Cooking chole with rice or bhature is a weekend favourite for many, but could it pose unexpected risks? Tragically, this question arose after two young men lost their lives in Noida due to smoke accumulation while cooking chole. Here’s what happened and why this incident highlights critical safety concerns in the kitchen.

The Incident: Chole Cooking Turns Fatal

Two boys, Upendra (22) and Shivam (23) were discovered dead in their rented room in Noida’s Sector 70, Uttar Pradesh. They operated a chole kulche food cart and lived in a small, poorly ventilated space in Basai village.

According to reports, the incident occurred after they left a pot of chole cooking overnight on a gas stove. Smoke filled the room, which had no proper ventilation. Neighbours spotted smoke pouring from the property early in the morning. Upon breaking open the door, they found both men unconscious. They were rushed to the hospital, but doctors said they had already passed away.

Cause of Death: The Role of Carbon Monoxide

The police stated that the deaths were caused by smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the room. CO is a deadly gas that interferes with the body’s oxygen supply, making it extremely hazardous in enclosed spaces.

What Happens When You Inhale Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin in the blood with a much greater affinity than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). This reduces the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen and prevents oxygen release to tissues, leading to:

  • Hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) in vital organs like the brain and heart.
  • Cellular asphyxiation, as CO disrupts cellular respiration by binding to proteins.
  • Organ failure and tissue damage can cause death.

Safety Tips for Using Gas Stoves

  • Keep Flammable Items Away
  • Cook in Well-Ventilated Areas
  • Using sharp knives makes it easier to control them and reduces the risk of injuries.
  • Keep gadgets away from water to avoid electrical dangers.
  • Avoid overloading outlets, which can cause short circuits.
  • Check for gas leaks regularly, using soapy water to identify bubbles on the connections.

Conclusion

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers in our kitchens, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. By taking simple precautions, such tragedies can be prevented, ensuring the safety of everyone in your home. Stay vigilant and prioritize kitchen safety.
