Dr. Navdeep Singh, NEET 2017 Topper, Found Dead in Hostel
Dr. Navdeep Singh, who gained national attention after securing All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in 2017, was found dead on Sunday in his hostel room at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Delhi. The 25-year-old was pursuing his second year of post-graduate studies at MAMC. His death has shocked his hometown of Muktsar in Punjab and left the community mourning the loss of a young, promising doctor.
Discovery of the Incident
Dr. Singh’s body was discovered when he did not respond to phone calls. Concerned, his father, Gopal Singh, a school principal in Muktsar, sent a friend to check on him. The friend found the door to Dr. Singh’s hostel room locked from the inside. Authorities suspect he died by suicide, though no note was found at the scene. The Delhi Police have initiated inquest proceedings.
A Humble Beginning to an Exceptional Career
Dr. Singh, who had always been passionate about science, credited his father’s role as a Physics teacher for inspiring him to pursue medicine. In 2017, after securing the top rank in NEET, he opted to study at Maulana Azad Medical College due to its affordable fee structure. Despite scoring 88% in his Class 12 board exams, he focused more on cracking NEET, his ultimate goal.
Community Mourns the Loss
The news of Dr. Singh’s death has devastated Muktsar, where he was regarded as a role model for many aspiring students. Kapil Sharma, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Tamkot village, and a family friend, expressed disbelief over the tragic incident. “When Navdeep topped NEET, many people in Muktsar celebrated him. He inspired a lot of young students,” said Sharma.
Sharma also noted that Dr. Singh had spoken with his father the night before his death and seemed completely normal. “He shared everything with his parents, and there was no indication of stress. We are shocked by his decision to take such an extreme step,” he added.
Final Rites
Dr. Singh’s body was handed over to his family after the post-mortem examination. His cremation was scheduled for Monday afternoon in Muktsar. The sudden loss of such a bright, promising young doctor has left the community in mourning and searching for answers.
If someone is struggling, it's important to seek help. Support doesn't always have to come from someone who is professional, friends, family, or whom who fell free to contact can also provide the care needed. Also, maintaining a positive mindset through workouts, meditation, and self-care is crucial
