Indian Army Hosts Organ Donation Awareness Initiative

Summary: The Western Command of the Indian Army organized an organ donation awareness initiative in Panchkula, uniting soldiers, families, and citizens to dispel myths, honor donors, and inspire pledges for saving lives.

 

Awareness Drive and Public Outreach

The Western Command of the Indian Army (Panchkula, Haryana) under the guidance of Lt. Gen. Manoj Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-In-Chief, organised an awareness drive regarding organ donation. The participants of this awareness drive comprised of 400 individuals which including serving personnel with their families, and school children, who showed up to support public health and humanitarian service.

A few weeks preceding this drive, various activities were held for the public outreach to emphasise the need and importance of organ donation. The activities, including an awareness walkathon and cyclothon, were organised by the Command Hospital, Western Command, and Chandimandir Cantonment and attended to by persons of all age groups. In addition, Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) held interactive sessions for raising awareness of organ donation across the Chandimandir Cantonment.

Dispelling Myths and Inspiring Change

These events quashed myths, addressed fears and inspired open conversations regarding organ donation. Any queries or doubts regarding medical, legal, and ethical aspects of organ donation were addressed and explained by renowned experts from the Armed Forces Medical Services.

Lt. Gen.Katiyar, during the main event, said that organ donation is selflessness, which is the purest form of service, surpassing the wars fought on the battlefield. He requested the public to be of service to their fellowmen by pledging to donate their organs and save lives.

Honoring Donors and Taking the Pledge

Felicitation of the families of the deceased organ donors and the living donors who donated to their family was carried out. The event concluded with an “organ donation pledge” by all persons present, which reaffirmed the commitment of the Indian Army to not just protect the nation from war, but also lead others to take steps for the benefits of humanity, public health and social responsibility.
