Outrage Over Diesel-Fried Paratha Highlights Food Safety Issues

Paratha, a staple food in many Indian households, comes in numerous variations, often stuffed with mashed vegetables, boiled potatoes, grated paneer, or minced chicken, egg, and mutton. Indians have long experimented with different types of parathas.

Recently, a shocking video has gone viral on social media, showing a shopkeeper deep frying paratha in diesel. The video, which has generated significant attention, features a person behind the camera commenting, “This tastes like kachori.” The unconventional and hazardous method of cooking has prompted netizens to tag FSSAI out of concern.

Captioned “True recipe for cancer (petrol diesel wala paratha) Where are we heading?”, the video was shared on X . This alarming incident coincides with the recent release of dietary guidelines by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN), urging Indians to consume a clean and nutritious diet. According to the ICMR, over 56 per cent of non-communicable diseases are attributed to improper diets.

Social media users have expressed their outrage. One user posted, “My new list of harmful cooking oils: diesel, petrol, seed oils,” while another wrote, “He will be buying a Ferrari shortly, and his clients will be selling their houses and cars to afford cancer treatment.”

Concerns about food safety regulations were also raised, with one user questioning, “Where are food licensing and standards?”

Unhealthy food trends can have major negative effects on the body, such as vitamin deficits, reduced physical processes and weaker immune systems. A balanced diet is necessary for maintaining good health, boosting the immune system and lowering the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats improves both physical and mental function. Experts advise avoiding following viral diet trends on social media and instead speaking with a dietician or healthcare expert for a personalized food plan.
