Steroids Triple Heart Attack Risk—Study Warns

A recent study conducted by hospital-based researchers in Denmark has revealed alarming heart health risks associated with anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use. The findings suggest that men who use AAS face a significantly higher chance of developing serious cardiovascular diseases over time.

What Are Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS)?

Anabolic androgenic steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone designed to promote muscle growth and increase strength. Although these substances are banned in competitive sports, they are still widely used for bodybuilding and recreational fitness. While previous studies have linked AAS use to higher mortality rates, long-term data on heart disease risks have been limited—until now.

Study Overview

Published in Circulation, the study analyzed data from 1,189 men who were penalized for AAS use in Danish fitness centers between 2006 and 2018. To assess their heart disease risk, researchers compared them with 59,450 men from the general Danish population, matching participants by age and sex. The study tracked various cardiovascular conditions over an average follow-up period of 11 years.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease

The study found that AAS users faced a much greater risk of developing severe heart conditions, including:

  1. Heart attacks (acute myocardial infarction) – three times higher risk
  2. Heart surgeries (such as bypass or stent procedures) – nearly three times higher risk
  3. Blood clots (venous thromboembolism) – over twice the risk
  4. Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) – more than twice the risk
  5. Heart failure – 3.6 times higher risk
  6. Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) – nearly nine times higher risk

Key Observations and Limitations

The study did not determine whether AAS users stopped or continued using steroids after being sanctioned. Additionally, it did not specify the types or dosages of steroids used. However, despite these limitations, the study demonstrated that AAS users had significantly higher rates of cardiovascular disease.

Conclusion

The findings highlight the serious and long-lasting dangers of anabolic steroid use on heart health. With significantly higher risks of heart attacks, blood clots, and heart failure, this study provides strong evidence that AAS use can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening cardiovascular conditions. Health professionals and fitness enthusiasts should be aware of these risks and take necessary precautions when considering performance-enhancing substances.
