A police officer in Prayagraj has been suspended after a viral video allegedly showed him mixing ash into food prepared for devotees at a religious gathering. The incident occurred late Thursday night at a Bhandara (community meal) organized for pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh.
SHO Faces Disciplinary Action
The accused officer, Brijesh Tiwari, who served as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Soraon police station, was reportedly upset that the event was held without prior police permission. When senior officials of the Prayagraj Commissionerate became aware of the incident through social media, they immediately ordered an investigation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Soraon, was assigned to probe the matter. After a preliminary inquiry, the officer was found guilty, leading to swift action by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Trans Ganga, Kuldeep Singh, who ordered his suspension. Further investigations have been directed to ensure accountability.
Locals Organize Meals for Devotees
According to reports, the incident occurred near Bhavapur Toll Plaza Road, where locals had set up a Bhandara after witnessing devotees walking long distances without food or water. The community gathered resources to prepare meals for the pilgrims, ensuring they had something to eat on their journey to the sacred Sangam.
Tensions Rise Over Police Intervention
The SHO reportedly instructed the organizers to vacate the location. However, when they refused to comply, he allegedly poured ash into one of the food vessels. This act sparked immediate anger among the locals and devotees present. The video of the incident quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread criticism and prompting authorities to take swift disciplinary action.

Senior officials have assured a thorough investigation into the matter. The ACP has been tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry to determine any further necessary actions against the erring officer.
This incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining law and order while ensuring that religious sentiments and humanitarian efforts are respected during large gatherings like the Maha Kumbh.
