New Street Scam in Gurugram—Are You the Next Target?
Gurugram’s traffic situation has long been a topic of concern, with heavy congestion and reckless driving making the streets unsafe for pedestrians. A recent social media post has sparked fresh debates about pedestrian safety, highlighting a disturbing incident where a driver allegedly threatened pedestrians to extort money.
Incident Reported on Reddit
A Reddit user, shared their experience on the Gurgaon subreddit, warning others about a potential scam. According to the now-deleted post, the user and their friends were walking when a Maruti Ertiga deliberately brushed against one of them with its side mirror. Expecting an apology, they were instead met with aggression.
The driver stopped the vehicle, stepped out, and began yelling, accusing them of damaging the car’s side mirror. The situation escalated quickly and had bystanders and security guards not intervened, the victims feared they might have been physically assaulted. The driver allegedly used abusive language and even issued threats, demanding compensation for the supposed damage. Shockingly, no one asked whether the pedestrian was injured, reinforcing the notion that the act was a deliberate ploy to extort money.
Public Reaction on Social Media
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users labelled it as outright “gundagardi” (hooliganism), with one user commenting, “This is not a scam anymore; it’s just organized hooliganism.” Another person shared a similar experience, stating, “This happened to me outside my office. No one stops them.”
However, not all commenters blamed drivers entirely. Some users pointed out that pedestrians often walk carelessly, blocking pathways. One user remarked, “Many office workers walk in groups, blocking roads and pathways. They should be mindful of others.” Another advised, “Always walk on designated footpaths. You never know the driver’s mood.”
Conclusion
The alleged scam serves as a warning for people walking on Gurugram’s roads. Pedestrians must remain alert, while authorities should take strict action against such incidents. Awareness and collective responsibility can help make the city’s streets safer for everyone.
