Girl Sells ₹1.16 Crore Jewellery for ₹680—Reason Will Shock You

In a surprising case in Shanghai, China, a teenage girl unknowingly sold her mother’s expensive jewellery, worth one million yuan (₹1.16 crore), for just 60 yuan (₹680). Her reason? She wanted to buy lip studs and earrings. The shocking revelation has sparked widespread discussion online about parenting and financial awareness among teenagers.

How the Theft Was Discovered

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother, identified as Wang, reported the missing jewellery to the Wanli police station of the Putuo Public Security Bureau. Upon investigation, it was revealed that her daughter, surnamed Li, had mistakenly believed the jewellery—comprising jade bracelets, necklaces, and gemstone pieces—was fake and decided to sell it.

Teen's Justification

When Wang confronted her daughter, Li admitted to selling the jewellery for just 60 yuan. She explained that she had seen someone wearing lip studs and wanted one for herself. The lip stud cost 30 yuan, and she also wanted a pair of earrings for the same price, bringing the total to 60 yuan.

Police Investigation and Recovery

After receiving Wang’s complaint, the police swiftly began their investigation. They reviewed surveillance footage, coordinated with market officials, and successfully identified the jade recycling shop where the jewellery had been sold. Fortunately, they were able to recover the stolen items.
“The shop owner was not present that day, so we contacted them by phone and arranged for them to come to the police station for further coordination,” explained police officer Fan Gaojie.

Public Reaction and Online Debate

The case quickly gained attention online, leading to intense discussions about parenting and financial literacy. Some social media users questioned why a wealthy family had not provided the teenager with sufficient pocket money.
One commenter wrote, “If the family owns jewellery worth a million yuan, why not give the child some allowance?”
Others, however, defended the mother’s stance, arguing that pocket money should not be used to purchase unnecessary items. One person commented, “Giving minors money to buy lip studs? Even as a college student, I cannot support that.”
Another user criticized the overall situation, saying, “This is troubling for the shop owner, the police, and the family. Adolescents should learn to communicate with their parents. Stealing from family is still theft.

Lessons and Takeaways

Following the investigation, the jewellery was returned to Wang. However, the incident has raised important discussions about teenage decision-making, financial responsibility, and the role of parents in guiding their children.
While teenage curiosity and desire for trends are natural, open communication and financial education can help prevent such unfortunate situations in the future.
