Doctor Kills Rival in Love, Hides Body in Fridge
A 24-year-old man from Tripura was found murdered and his body was hidden inside a refrigerator. The case, which unfolded over several days, has stunned the local community and raised serious concerns about interpersonal violence stemming from emotional conflicts.
Background of the Case
The victim, Sariful Islam, an electrician working with the Agartala Smart City Project, was reportedly invited to the home of Dr. Dibakar Saha (29) in Indranagar, Agartala, on the night of June 8. He was informed that he would be receiving a gift.
However, upon arrival, Sariful encountered three other individuals — Animesh Yadav (21), Nabanit Das (25), and Jaydeep Das (20) — all believed to be co-conspirators in what police describe as a premeditated murder.
Motive
As per statements from West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Kiran Kumar, the crime appears to have been rooted in a romantic rivalry. Dr. Saha was reportedly in love with a woman — who, according to investigators, was also his cousin. Sariful, the victim, was allegedly in a relationship with the same woman. This emotional conflict and jealousy likely escalated into a calculated act of violence.
Method of Murder
Authorities say Sariful was strangled to death, a method that is both silent and indicative of intent. After the murder, his body was initially placed in a trolley bag, highlighting an attempt to hide the evidence quickly.
Later, the body was stored in a refrigerator — a move that suggests efforts to delay decomposition, potentially to avoid immediate detection. On June 9, Dr. Saha’s parents, Dipak Saha (52) and Debika Saha, allegedly travelled from Gandacherra to help with the disposal of the body. They used a vehicle to transport the remains from Agartala to Gandacherra.
Medical and Forensic Concerns
From a medical and forensic standpoint, strangulation typically leads to mechanical asphyxia, cutting off oxygen to the brain. Victims often show signs such as bruising around the neck, petechiae (tiny red spots) in the eyes, and internal injuries, all of which assist medical examiners in confirming the cause of death.
Refrigeration, although not a reliable method of long-term preservation, can slow tissue breakdown. However, improper storage can still lead to postmortem changes that may complicate time-of-death estimates.
Use a Variety of Healthy Fats
The police have arrested all six suspects Dr. Saha, the three alleged accomplices, and his parents. They are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Conclusion
SP Kumar emphasised that the investigation is still ongoing and more details are expected to emerge. Meanwhile, the incident has deeply unsettled residents in both Agartala and Gandacherra, prompting discussions around the mental health impacts of romantic jealousy and the need for emotional conflict resolution in relationships.
