Air India Plane Crashes After Takeoff in Ahmedabad
On the afternoon of June 12, 2025, an Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The wide-body aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was carrying over 240 passengers when it suddenly lost altitude and crashed into the Meghani area within the city limits.
Eyewitnesses Report Smoke and Flames
A video captured by bystanders showed the aircraft in distress just moments before it fell and exploded on impact. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the crash site, visible from several kilometres away. The explosion was likely intensified by the aircraft’s full fuel load, which was necessary for the long-haul international route.
Immediate Emergency Response Deployed
Following the crash, multiple fire engines and ambulances were rushed to the scene. Rescue operations began immediately, with emergency medical teams and first responders working under difficult conditions due to the fire and debris. At the time of writing, there is no confirmed number of casualties, but the severity of the incident has raised serious concerns about survivability.
Health and Safety Concerns Post-Crash
The intensity of the fire and the presence of aviation fuel present a significant risk not only to survivors but also to rescue personnel and nearby residents. Inhaling smoke from aviation fuel combustion can cause respiratory distress, eye irritation, and other acute health issues. Authorities have likely initiated air quality assessments in the surrounding areas.
Government and Regulatory Response
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. He confirmed that the Central Government will offer full support in managing rescue efforts and investigating the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to lead the official investigation. A technical team from Boeing may also join the inquiry to determine whether any mechanical or software failure contributed to the accident.
Conclusion
In aviation-related health and emergencies like this, time is critical. Medical facilities in the region are likely on high alert, prepared to treat burn injuries, trauma, and smoke inhalation cases. Crisis counsellors may also be mobilized to support families of passengers and affected communities.
As more information becomes available, authorities will be better able to assess the full impact of the crash and offer appropriate care and support to those affected.
