100% Literacy? Kerala Woman’s Viral Response Says It All

A video of a woman from Kerala defending her state’s literacy and progressive values has gone viral on social media. The debate started on the comedy show India’s Got Latent, where comedian Jaspreet Singh remarked on Kerala’s literacy mockingly. He exaggerated a Malayali accent, saying, “Kerala, saar… 100% literacy saar,” in response to a contestant who said she had no political leanings and did not vote.

His comment, along with reactions from other panelists like Ranveer Allahbadia, Apoorva Mukhija, and Ashish Chanchlani, led to widespread criticism. Many Malayalis found the joke offensive, arguing that it reduced Kerala’s significant achievements to a mere stereotype.

A Powerful Response Goes Viral

Soon after, a video surfaced featuring a woman from Kerala who delivered a strong and articulate rebuttal. Her response highlighted how literacy in Kerala goes beyond reading and writing—it shapes the state’s culture, civic sense, and progressive outlook. She stated:

“Yes, we have 100% literacy, so we eat beef.”

She continued to list Kerala’s achievements:

  • Informed VotingWe have 100% literacy, so we vote thoughtfully.
  • Film ExcellenceOur literacy helps us create globally acclaimed movies like Kumbalangi Nights.
  • Social HarmonyHindus, Christians, and Muslims coexist peacefully in Kerala.
  • Development ModelTheKerala Modelis recognized worldwide for its success in education and healthcare.
  • Gender EqualityWe advocate for and respect all genders.
  • Political AwarenessWe hold our government accountable when necessary.
  • Cultural PrideKerala is calledGod’s Own Countryfor a reason.

Social Media Reactions

Following the viral video, Malayalis and others took to social media to express their support. Many pointed out that Kerala’s literacy translates into better civic sense, cleaner cities, and a thriving film industry. Some mocked the irony of influencers attempting to ridicule a state known for its high educational standards.

A famous tweet captured the sentiment:Kerala: where 100% literacy meets 200% common sense.Let us move beyond stereotypes and embrace knowledge, respect, and real cultural pride.”

Another user commented:

“They thought they mocked Kerala, but now look at the situation—it’s like a failed student mocking a first-rank holder.”

Backlash Against India’s Got Latent

Meanwhile, the controversy has led to a significant backlash against the show and its panelists, particularly Ranveer Allahbadia. Social media users criticized his role in the debate, leading to a decline in his follower count and scrutiny over online content moderation.
This incident serves as a reminder of the power of literacy and awareness. It also highlights how humor, when based on stereotypes, can backfire—especially against a well-informed audience.
