Eight Lives Saved Through Dual Organ Donations at AIIMS

Organs from two road accident victims who were declared brain-dead at AIIMS have saved eight lives in the national capital. The victims, a 42-year-old woman from Rajasthan and a 27-year-old man referred from Palwal, Haryana, were admitted to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center on May 15 and declared brain-dead three days later, according to Dr Farooque, chief of the Trauma Centre.

The woman’s family consented to organ donation, allowing the retrieval process to begin at 7 am and continue until around 1 pm. For the 27-year-old man, who was brought in by police and initially unattended, AIIMS coordinated with hospital administration and police to locate his relatives, who then consented to the donation. His brothers provided the necessary consent as his parents had passed away two years earlier.

Dr. Farooque highlighted that this was the first instance of simultaneous organ donations at the centre, with collaboration between AIIMS, other city hospitals, and transplant teams facilitating the process. The organ procurement team at the trauma centre worked in conjunction with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

AIIMS received a heart, a liver, and three kidneys, while four corneas were stored in the bank. The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences received a liver and one kidney, and a heart was transplanted to a patient at the Army RR hospital. However, lungs allotted to teams from KIMS Hyderabad and CIMS Ahmedabad were deemed unsuitable for transplant.
